Development of Seedling Raising Technique for Mechanical Rice Transplanter

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The seedlings for transplanter machine were raised on plastic tray and polythene sheet using wooden strip to form a individual seedling block to measure the seedling strength for successful operation of the mechanical rice transplanter. Rice husk, saw dust and sandy loam soil was used as seed covering materials as treatment. Both dry and sprouted seed was used as treatment as well. The highest seedling strength was found for T₁₄(7.49) treatment followed by T₆, T₃, and T₅ treatments respectively. The lowest seedling strength was found for T₁₃(4.19) treatments followed by T₁₀, and T8 respectively.

Objectives:

To evaluate the different seedling raising technique for mechanical transplanting in Bangladesh condition

Methodology:

Mechanical transplanting of rice was the process of transplanting specifically raised seedling of rice as a mat at pre-determined and desired spacing. The seedling may be raised in a number of ways for machine transplanting i.e. dry and soft bed on polythene sheet, flexible and rigid tray and industrialized method. The seedling raised on polythene sheet was cut into slices of 28 × 58 cm size to feed into the seedling trays of the transplanter. Dry and Soft Bed on Polythene Sheet A piece of perforated polythene sheet (The holes are made of 0.2 - 0.3cm diameter with 2 × 2 cm spacing) was placed on a leveled dry/wet bed and wood strips of 2.0-3.0cm wide and 2.0cm thick are used to control the thickness of seedbed and separate seedling block according to transplanter tray size. Flexible and Rigid Tray Plastic tray of 28 × 58 × 2.5cm size was used for raising seedling. About 375 seedling trays was needed for one hectare land transplanting (fig. 14). A total of 14 treatments combing with different seed covering materials and dry and sprouted seed were used for this experiment. The cowdung mixed soil and without cowdung mixed soil were also used as treatment for this experiment. The treatments were as follows: T₁= Dry seed+ Soil+ Rice Husk T₂= Dry seed+ Soil+ Sawdust T₃= Dry seed+ Soil+ Soil T₄=Dry seed+ (Soil+ cowdung) + Rice Husk T₅= Dry seed+ (Soil+ cowdung) + Sawdust T₆= Dry seed+ (Soil+ cowdung) + Soil T₇=Sprouted+ Soil + Rice Husk T₈=Sprouted+ Soil + Sawdust T₉=Sprouted+ Soil + Soil T₁₀= Sprouted + (Soil+ Cowdung) + Rice Husk T₁₁= Sprouted + (Soil+ Cowdung) + Sawdust T₁₂= Sprouted + (Soil+ Cowdung) + Soil T₁₃=Frame+ Sprouted+ Soil T₁₄=Frame+ Dry seed+ Soil.

Achievement/Findings:

The quality of seedling is very important for successful operation of mechanical rice transplanter. This was only one crop season data though it gave positive response. The experiment would be repeated in several rice seasons to get better results.
