Effects of Minimum Tillage on Fuel Consumption and Economics in Chickpea (cicer Arietinum L.) Cultivation in High BARInd Tract

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Fuel consumption in CT, SPST, ZT, BP and ST was 30, 27, 24, 28 and 16 l ha^-1, respectively. Fuel consumption was the highest in CT (30 l ha^-1) and the lowest in ST (16 l ha^-1). CO2 emission was higher (79 kg ha^-1) in CT during land preparation. ST saved considerable amount of CO₂ emission (47%) compared to CT in land preparation. Tillage options showed significant effect on labour requirement in land preparation and seeding. Labour requirement in CT was two times higher than other treatment. SPST, ZT, BP and ST saved 41, 41, 41 and 48% labour in land preparation and seeding compared to CT. Cost of land preparation and seeding was statistically higher in CT (3426 Tk ha^-1) and lowest cost (2034 Tk ha^-1) was obtained in ST. Emergence rate was highest in ST and lowest in CT. Grain yield was quite similar to all tillage options in chickpea production. CT obtained the highest costs with Tk 32550 ha-1 and ST showed the lowest with Tk 31120 ha^-1. BCR was observed highest in minimum tillage operation (1.66-1.70) compared to CT (1.62) except in ZT (1.55) as the yield was low in ZT.

Objectives:

To compare the fuel consumption and production costs of minimum tillage systems compared with conventional tillage in chickpea cultivation

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in High Barind tract (HBT), Godagari, Rajshahi. Five tillage systems were compared in the experiment: conventional tillage (CT) with 2WT, single pass shallow tillage with VMP (SPST), zero tillage with VMP (ZT), bed planting with VMP (BP) and strip tillage with VMP (ST). CT consisted of two passes of roto tiller and the final levelling of the plot for seedbed preparation. Seed and fertilizer were broadcasted manually. Other tillage systems consisted of tillage operation by VMP and seed and fertilizer were applied simultaneously in single pass operation. Tillage systems were applied to the same plot during the experimental period. The experiment was carried out in a randomised complete block design with three replications. Chickpea was planted with HYV BINA chola4. Seeding was completed on 4 December 2010. Costs of all the field operations during the growing season were estimated in Taka. The value of the wheat grain constituted the gross income. In arriving at the gross margins, the total cost and gross income/or net economic return was evaluated together and was calculated as plot yield (kg ha-1) to total cost of wheat production. All costs and income figures are presented as per hectare. The results of the economic analysis for the five tillage systems were based on the mean of three replications. Data were analysed statistically using the analysis of variance (ANOVA). The statistical separation of means among treatments was obtained using the least significant difference (LSD) test at the 0.05 significance level.

Achievement/Findings:

Minimum tillage by VMP saved 10-46% fuel compared to CT in land preparation. Minimum tillage saved 21-41% land preparation cost compared to CT. Minimum tillage showed no yield advantage over conventional tillage in chickpea cultivation. ST appeared as fuel and labour saving tillage technology in chickpea cultivation.
