Effects of Minimum Tillage on Fuel Consumption and Economics in Lentil (lens Culinaris Medik.) Cultivation in High BARInd Tract

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field capacity of 2WT in CT was the highest and the lowest was of VMP in ST, BP and ZT. Fuel consumption in CT, SPST, ZT, BP and ST was 44, 41, 21, 43 and 21 l ha^-1, respectively. CT showed significantly higher carbon dioxide emission (115 kg ha^-1) during land preparation which was similar to BP (111 kg ha^-1) and the lowest in ST (55 kg ha^-1). ZT and ST reduced same amount of CO₂ emission (52%) compared to CT. Labour requirement for land preparation was 58, 23, 17, 21 and 22 man-hr ha¬-1 in CT, SPST, ZT, BP and ST, respectively. SPST, ZT, BP and ST can save 33, 58, 34 and 50% land preparation cost compared to CT. Emergence rate of lentil was the highest in ST followed by SPST, CT, ZT and BP. Lentil yield was not influenced by tillage systems. Lowest yield was obtained in ZT (0.52 t ha^-1). CT resulted in the highest costs with Tk 34670 ha^-1 and the lowest in ZT (Tk 32330 ha^-1). Highest BCR was observed in ST (1.32) followed by CT (1.25), SPST (1.20), BP (1.19) and ZT (1.17).

Objectives:

To compare the fuel consumption and production costs of minimum tillage systems compared with conventional tillage in lentil cultivation.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in High Barind tract (HBT), Godagari, Rajshahi. Five tillage systems were compared in the experiment: conventional tillage (CT) with 2WT, single pass shallow tillage with VMP (SPST), zero tillage with VMP (ZT), bed planting with VMP (BP) and strip tillage with VMP (ST). CT consisted of two passes of roto tiller and the final levelling of the plot for seedbed preparation. Seed and fertilizer were broadcasted manually. Other tillage systems consisted of tillage operation by VMP and seed and fertilizer were applied simultaneously in single pass operation. Tillage systems were applied to the same plot during the experimental period. The experiment was carried out in a randomised complete block design with three replications. Lentil was planted with HYV BARI masur4. Seeding was completed on 15 November 2010. Costs of all the field operations during the growing season were estimated in Taka. The value of the wheat grain constituted the gross income. In arriving at the gross margins, the total cost and gross income/or net economic return was evaluated together and was calculated as plot yield (kg ha-1) to total cost of wheat production. All costs and income figures are presented as per hectare. The results of the economic analysis for the five tillage systems were based on the mean of three replications. Data were analysed statistically using the analysis of variance (ANOVA). The statistical separation of means among treatments was obtained using the least significant difference (LSD) test at the 0.05 significance level.

Achievement/Findings:

Minimum tillage (e.g. SPST, ZT, BP and ST) saved 61-71% labour in land preparation compared to CT. ZT and ST reduced 52% fuel consumption in land preparation compared to CT. Minimum tillage yielded similar to CT in lentil cultivation. ZT and ST indicated fuel and cost saving tillage technology in lentil cultivation.
