Farm Machinery Technology Development and Dissemination

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

As part of popularizing BRRI developed machinery, field demonstration and training were conducted at the project sites in different districts of Bangladesh. As many as 28 demonstrations and 21 training programs were conducted during May-June, 2011 at different places of Gazipur, Chuandanga, Kushtia, Noakhali, Chandpur and Rajshahi districts. At least 40 participants for agricultural machinery demonstration program and 20 participants for training program on BRRI developed machinery including one Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officer was attended. The farmers were introduced how to operate and function of the machine at first, then participants operated the machines one by one. Farmers showed their keen interest on BRRI rice wheat thresher (TH7), BRRI USG applicator and open drum thresher.

Objectives:

1.To create awareness among the farmers about the benefit of using BRRI developed farm machinery through field demonstration and training

2. To impart training to machine operators, agricultural extension workers manufacturers and traders on operation, reparing/maintenance and manufacturing of BRRI developed farm machinery

3. To motivate the farmers on the use of BRRI developed machinery for increasing timeliness of cultivation, reduction costs of crop production and postharvest losses

4. To strengthen research and development on farm machinery, postharvest technology and renewable energy resources

Methodology:

Site Selection: Sites were selected on the basis of the following criteria: I) Easily accessible II) High cropping intensity area III) Labor shortage area. At each site, at least 40 participants of farmers were invited. Introductory session were arranged to familiarize the machine performance, unit price, profitability over traditional practices, operation, repair and maintenance of the machine. Machines were operated in front of participants by the help of project mechanic. Every participant operated BRRI agricultural machines on their own interest. Female participants were also encouraged to operate BRRI machines. Machines were operated before the participants at least one and half hour. Discussion session was arranged to collect participant’s reaction on the prospects and drawbacks of the machines.
