Evaluation and Modification of Direct Seeding Machines in Upland Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

BRRI developed inclined plate type multi crop seeder was tested in the divisional soil bin bed. During operation furrow open, seed dispensing, covering, line to line spacing etc was found good. Seed rate was found 20-25 kg/ha. Hill type seeding could be adjusted at a proper distance by changing sprocket number/ratio.

Objectives:

To design and development inclined plate type seed metering device for maintaining hill to hill distance of the dispensed seed and reducing seed damage

Methodology:

Description of the seed metering device To minimize seed damage as well as maintaining hill type seeding at a proper distance, modification was made on the previous BRRI developed seeder. This type seed metering device was known as inclined plate type metering device. Because of inclined plate type seed metering device, seeder machine also known as inclined plate type seeder that could be used for multi-purpose seeding. It was made by aluminum. The disk diameter was 50 mm. On the periphery of the disk, six slots were provided for dispensing seeds. The number of disk slot and the peripheral distance between the slots for seed dispensing were determined by testing the seeder in the laboratory for desired seed rate. Sprocket-4 was variable in terms of teeth. 10, 15 and 20 teeth sprocket was used on the metering shaft for 10, 15 and 20 cm hill to hill distance. Achievement/Findings:

Inclined plate type seed metering device was developed and it performance was tested in both lab and soil bin condition. Hill to hill distance could be adjusted for 10, 15 and 20cm. Because of hill dispensing arrangement, around 15% seed could be saved using the developed seeder compared to round type seed metering device seeder. Number of seed dispensed per hill, hill to hill distance, depth of seeding and number of seeds per meter was found satisfactory for paddy.
