Performance Evaluation of Direct Seeding Machine (pto) for Minimum Tillage System

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Experiment on reduced tillage by PTO Seeder was conducted at Mayshan, Kapasia in boro 2009-10 season. There were four treatments, viz. T₁: Strip DSR seeding, T₂: Full tilth DSR, T_3: Strip tillage transplanting and T_4: Farmer’s or conventional practice. The field capacity of the PTO seeder was 0.15 ha/hr. It saved 50% seed compared to conventional practice. In strip DSR (T₁) seeding and strip tillage transplanting (T₃), 33% less irrigation water was required compared to conventional (T₄). No significant yield difference was observed between T₄ and T_1. Crop yield was found 4.08, 3.36 and 4.11 ton/ha for the treatments of T₁, T₃ and T₄ respectively.

Methodology:

Power tiller operated seeder (PTOS) could be used for multipurpose tilling, seeding in line, covering the seed and land leveling in a signal pass. The experiment was conducted to establish DSR with PTOS in Rabi season 2009-10 at farmer’s field, Kapasia using BRRI dhan28. Four crop establishment options viz. T₁= Strip (DSR) seeding, T₂= Full tilth DSR seeding, T₃=Strip transplanting and T₄= Farmer’s practice was evaluated. Pendymethyl, a pre-emergence herbicide was applied after 4 days of direct seeding in the PTOS plots. 48 tynes were used in full tilth tillage of PTOS. PTOS was operated in the field with strip tillage arrangement (24 tiller tynes with special arrangement). BRRI recommended fertilizers doses were applied before seeding operation. In DSR plot, urea was applied in 20 DAS, 40 DAS, 60 DAS and booting stage. Seeding performance, area coverage per unit time, plant establishment, fuel consumption, irrigation amount, and crop yield were recorded. Soil type of the experimental plots was silty clay.

Power tiller operated seeder (PTOS) maintained uniform depth of seeding, proper seed distribution and better seed covering which enhance better plant establishment. The field capacity of the PTOS was 0.15 ha/hr. It saved 50% seed requirement compared to conventional practice. Around 30% less water was required in T_1, T₂ and T₃ compared to T_4. Crop yield was not significantly higher in T₄ (conventional practice) than T₁ (strip DSR). No crack formation was observed in T₁, T₂ and T₃. It was environment friendly for minimum disturbance of soil. This seeding method allows less CO₂ emission into the atmosphere.
