Study the Bed Planting Method with Conventional Practice in Rice Production

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Bed planting of rice is one of the approaches to increase water use efficiency and to produce more food per unit of water used. BRRI dhan28 was transplanted on raised bed in two rows during 2008-09 at BRRI HQ farm. Two rows on beds produced more productive tillers and biological yield. Raised bed system produced highest yield (6.01 t/ha) compared to conventional transplanting (5.66 t/ha). 37% water can be saved in raised bed system compared to conventional system. Water productivity is higher (10.4 kg of grain/ha-mm) in bed planting compared to conventional practice (7.7 kg of grain/ha-mm).

Methodology:

The treatments of the experiment were (i) conventional puddling (T₁) and (ii) conventional puddling followed by bed formation by shaper manually after 10 days of transplanting (T₂). Split plot design was followed with three replications. 30 days old seedlings were transplanted manually in 20 x 15 cm spacing in the 125 m2 plot. Herbicide (cereus) was applied after 10 days of transplanting. Data on plant height, productive tillers per square meter, grains per panicle, sterility percentage, 1000 grain weight and grain yield were taken randomly.

Achievement/Findings:

The total water requirement in bed planting and conventional planting system was 738 and 576 mm, respectively and about 37% less water was required in raised bed system compared to conventional practice. Transplanting in bed system produced higher yield (6.01 ton/ha) than compared to transplanting in conventional system plot (5.67 ton/ha).
