Design and Development of a Weeder for Both Lowland and Upland Conditions

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Newly developed wet and dry land weeder was tested in both wet and dry land conditions. The performance of the weeder was compared with BRRI weeder, BRRI kishan weeder, Japanese weeder and hand weeding techniques in wetland condition. This weeder was also compared with hand weeding technique in upland condition. In both cases, the performance of the weeder was found satisfactory in terms of field capacity (in wet condition: 6.14 decimal/h and in dry condition: 6.34 decimal/h) and degree of weeding (in wet condition: 78.14% and in dry condition: 88.86%). Farmers could use this weeder in both wet and dry land conditions. This weeder was suitable for wet land condition with minimum standing water. However in dry condition, it was suitable with row planted vegetables, pulse, groundnut and rice.

Objectives:

1.To design, fabricate and modification a weeder that could be used for weeding both in lowland and upland fields

2.To compare with other dry & wet land weeder

Methodology:

An engineering design was done with the help of AutoCAD programming and a prototype was fabricated using locally available materials GI pipe, GI sheet, MS sheet, MS flat bar and MS shaft in the divisional workshop. The fabricated weeder was tested in the BRRI research field in lowland conditions during Boro 2009 season with the following treatments to compare the performances of the weeeder. Treatments for wet land condition were as follows: T₁₌ BRRI weeder T₂= Japanese weeder T₃ = Krishan weeder T₄ = BRRI W&D weeder T₅ = Hand weeding As per treatments, the weeders were operated in the field after 32 days of rice transplanting. The weeder was also tested in the BARI research field during 2009 season in lentil plot with the following treatments to compare the performance in dry land condition. Treatments for dry land condition were as follows: T₁= BRRI wet and dry land weeder T₂= BARI dry land weeder T₃ = Hand weeding Randomized Complete Block (RCB) design was followed and the treatments were replicated thrice. Operation procedure of the weeder Before field operation, hoe of the weeder was adjusted considering field condition and operator height. Handle adjustment is important considering the operator’s height, force requirement and ease of operation. Therefore, minimum operational force was required to operate the weeder at the lower option of the adjustment lever.
