Evaluation and Modification of BRRI Developed Machines

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two closed drum threshers (Model 3), two self propelled reapers and five hydrotillers were tested in the Farm Machinery Research Workshop and the BRRI farm. The threshing capacity of improved closed drum thresher was 600 - 650 kg for paddy and 450 - 500 kg for wheat per hour. The reapers and hydro tillers were tested to verify the quality and functional problems. Physical dimensions were checked as per design specifications. Manufacturing faults were identified and informed the respective manufacturer to take necessary steps for rectification.

Objectives:

1.To verify the quality of BRRI machines (Reaper, Thresher and Dryer) as per specifications

2. To identify the functional problems of reaper, thresher and dryer.

3. To improve the performance of reaper, thresher and dryer.

Methodology:

Test, evaluation and modification of BRRI farm machines was the continuous activities of the annual research plan of the division. However, research workshop of BRRI has limited scope for large scale production of BRRI developed farm machinery. In the mean time, BRRI enlisted some potential farm machinery manufacturers from different parts of the country. BRRI developed farm machinery was procured from the enlisted manufacturers through open tender. Five hydrotillers, two closed drum threshers (Model 3), two self propelled reapers and two flat bed batch dryers were procured in the month of June 2006. Field performance of newly procured BRRI machines were evaluated at head quarter during Aman 2006, Wheat 2007 and Boro 2007 seasons. Functional problems of these machines were identified and respective manufacturers were informed about the faults of the machines for further rectification.

Achievement/Findings:

The forward speed was found 2.50 - 3.71 km/h, the field capacity was 0.25 - 0.27 ha/h and fuel consumption was 1.25 - 1.50 l/h. Recently a round knife was incorporated in the hydrotiller to increase the chopping efficiency of the grass and stubbles in the marshy land. The hydrotiller was tested in the BRRI farm and chopping performance was found to be very good.
