Evaluation and Modification of Direct Seeding Machines in Upland Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A new hitching system for Indian multi crop (IMC) planter with the power tiller was designed and fabricated in the research workshop of FMPHT division. Calibration tests were conducted at laboratory condition to determine the optimum seeding rates for wheat and paddy by this machine. Optimum seeding rates were found to be 120 and 46 kg/ha for wheat and paddy respectively. No visible breakages were found for wheat (Satabdi) and paddy (BRRI dhan28) during calibration test. Although breakages were found 4-7% in BR 3 variety as coarse, however these breakages can be minimized and reduced to less than 1% by mixing rice husk or saw dust with the paddy grain during seeding. The performance of BHT seeder and IMC planter were evaluated for the establishment of wheat in the tilled soil. The field capacities were found to be 0.214 and 0.124 ha/h, for BHT seeder and IMC planter, respectively. The crop establishment was found satisfactory for both BHT seeder and IMC planter machines for wheat seeding compared to traditional hand broadcasting method.

Objectives:

1. To compare the performance of BHT Seeder, IMC planter and IRRI slit seeder in pre-tilled and untilled field.

2. To identify a suitable seeder for wheat and paddy cultivation.

Methodology:

Hitching system Hitching systems were designed and fabricated in the FMPHT divisional research workshop. Calibration test BHT seeder and IMC planter were calibrated to determine the optimum seeding rate for wheat and paddy at laboratory condition. Calibration test of IRRI slit seeder was also conducted with different volume of paddy and saw dust ratio. Field capacity Field was well prepared by primary and secondary tillage machinery. Actual field capacity of the machine was measured by using the formula: FC= SW/10 (ha/hr), Where, S=Forward speed (km/hr), W=Width of machine (m) The experimental field was monitored regularly. Fertilizer was applied as per recommended dose. Irrigation water was supplied according to the requirement of the crop. Evaluation of machine performance BHT seeder and IMC planter were evaluated in comparison with hand broadcasting method for sowing wheat during 2006 season at BRRI upland soil. Hand broadcasting method was selected as a check. The variety Satabdy was used in this experiment and seed rate was 120 kg/ha for machine and 140 kg/ha for hand broadcasting method. Paddy variety of BRRI dhan28 was used for mechanical seeding by BHT seeder, IMC planter and IRRI slit seeder methods. The experimental plot size was 10m x 40m for both wheat and paddy seeding.

Achievement/Findings:

New hitching systems coupled with the power tiller worked well. For rice crop establishment grain breakage (4-7%) was minimized to almost nil (0-0.229%) by adding mixture of rice husk or saw dust with grain. For optimum seeding grain and husk mixture/saw dust ratio was found to be 1:1 to 1:1-1.3. Seeding rate can also be controlled in the single seed metering unit of IRRI slit seeder machine by adjusting only mixing ratio of rice husk or saw dust and grain. For wheat crop establishment seeding capacity of BHT seeder and IMCP seeder were faster than that of hand broadcasting method. Crop establishment in BHT seeder and IMCP seeder machines was uniform.
