Effect of Drum Speed of Thresher on Seed Quality

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The threshing drum speed (500-700 rpm) had no adverse effect on seed damage and seed viability of wheat and paddy. However, scattered grain loss (%) was increased with the increase of drum speed. The minimum and maximum scattered grain loss (%) observed for wheat and paddy were 2.28 to 3.29 and 2.11 to 4.0, respectively. Seed viability of wheat and paddy was ranged from 80-85% and 84-92%, respectively. Acceptable levels of germination percentage were found to be 91% for paddy, 94 % for wheat and 88% for mustard at the farmer's field.

Methodology:

Freshly harvested wheat (Shourav) and paddy (BRRI dhan29) were threshed by BRRI rice-wheat thresher (TH-7) at different drum speeds. The drum speeds were of 500, 550, 600, 650, 700 and 750 rpm for wheat and 500, 550, 600, 650 and 700 rpm for paddy. At each drum speed 10 kg of wheat and rice samples were threshed to observe the spilled grain loss (%), seed damage (%) and seed viability (%). The procedure was replicated three times at each speed. Moisture content were measured by moisture meter engine rpm was measured by tachometer. The mechanically threshed wheat and paddy was cleaned and sun dried for storage. Grain cracks were observed by a grain inspecting machine. One hundred grains were randomly selected for the measurement of germination. Each reading was replicated four times to get average value. One hundred seeds were soaked in water for 24 hours and then placed in Petridish lined with filter paper. The filter paper was moistened every day with fresh water to facilitate germination. The number of germinated seeds after 14 days was recorded as the germination percentage. Farmers were using BRRI rice-wheat thresher (TH-7) for threshing cereal crop. Mechanically threshed rice, wheat and mustard samples were collected from farmers of Digram agricultural block, Godhagari upazila, Rajshahi. Farmer's comments about seed damage and seed viability were recorded. There was no facility to measure drum speed in the farmer's field. They run the machine depending on their engine condition and eye observation. Germination test was conducted in FMPHT laboratory.
