Design and Development of Flat Bed Batch Drier for Paddy Drying

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Drying test was conducted in the flat bed batch dryer with paddy moisture content of 18.3% (w.b.) during May 2007. The average ambient temperature was 31.3°C. The experiment took about 7 hours to reduce moisture content from 18.3 to 13.6% (w.b.). Fuel consumption of the burner was 1.25 - 1.50 liters of kerosene per hour. Drying rate was 0.671% per hour.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of flat bed dryer in terms of drying rate and temperature gradient

Methodology:

BRRI developed flat bed batch dryer was procured from BRRI enlisted machinery manufacturer and tested at FMPHT divisional research workshop during Boro, 2007. Freshly harvested paddy of variety BRRI dhan29 was used for this experiment. Around 850 kg paddy was loaded in the drying chamber. The thickness of grain bed was 350 mm. Grain bed temperature was measured in two layers (Top and bottom) at four different places. The lower grain bed temperature was measured at a depth of 50 mm above the perforated sheet and the upper grain bed temperature was measured at 50 mm from the top of the grain surface. Ambient, grain bed and plenum chamber temperatures were measured by a digital thermometer. Ambient wet and dry bulb temperature was also measured by a hygrometer which was converted to percent relative humidity. The paddy moisture content was measured at four places of each layer. Fuel consumption, moisture content, grain bed temperature and ambient temperature were measured at hourly intervals.

Achievement/Findings:

Test was conducted with paddy moisture content of 18.3 % (w.b.) and ambient temperature was 31.3°C. The experiment took about 7 hours to reduce moisture content from 18.3 to 13.6% (w.b.) and fuel consumption of the kerosene burner was 1.25 - 1.50 liters per hour. The drying rate was 0.67% per hour. The highest and lowest temperatures of upper grain bed were 36.7°C and 30.7°C, respectively. On the other hand the highest and lower temperatures in lower grain bed were 38.7°C and 31.1°C, respectively. The average grain bed temperatures at upper and lower layer of grain bed were 33.1°C and 35.2°C respectively. It was observed that during last two hours of drying operation the ambient temperature decreased to 25oC and percent relative humidity was highest (96%) which affect the drying rate. It was also observed that the rate of moisture removal was almost static during last four hour of drying operation.
