Milling and Processing of Premium Quality Line (rpsc 148, Br 6902-72-4-2-1, Br 6902-61-7-1-3, Br 6902-16-5-1-1, Br 6902-14-4-2-5)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Six premium quality advanced lines developed by Plant Breeding Division were milled in commercial rice mill. About 50-75% of rice shape was curved which influence the increase of broken rice. BR 6902-14-4-2-5 was processed in the mill of Adhik Beej Utpadan Kendra, BADC, Technagapara, Gazipur as unparboiled condition. Friction type polisher was used in this mill. Head rice recovery was not acceptable because of excessive broken rice. RPSC 148, BR 6902-72-4-2-1, BR 6902-61-7-1-3 lines were milled in the Bengal Auto Rice Mill, Dinajpur as un-parboiled condition to observe the milling yield and others milling parameters like percent of head rice recovery and broken percentage using the miller practices. The average milling yield of these three samples was 58.76%. Moreover, the head rice recovery of the RPSC 148, BR 6902-72-4-2-1, BR 6902-61-7-1-3 lines were 32.03, 24.24 and 33.73%, respectively. Head rice recovery can be improved for larger sample size. BR 6902-14-4-2-5 and Basmati 386 were processed as half-parboiled condition in the Chacha Bhatiza rice mill, Lagalia, Gazipur. The head rice recovery of BR 6902-14-4-2-5 and Basmati 386 was 26.07 and 40.94%, respectively.

To observe the milling performance of premium quality rice

Methodology:

Six premium quality advanced lines developed by Plant Breeding Division, BRRI namely RPSC 148, BR 6902-72-4-2-1, BR 6902-61-7-1-3, BR 6902-16-5-1-1, BR 6902-14-4-2-5 and Basmati 386 were included in this study. Measurement of physical dimension of rice grains and decorticated kernels Random samples of six rice grains and decorticated kernels were taken to measure length breadth by using vernier caliper. Observation on the shape of kernel Paddy was dehulled manually and at least 20 rice sample of each variety were taken to measure whether the rice is straight or curved. Mill selection The premium quality rice were milled in the BADC rice mill and commercial auto rice mill as un-parboiled and half parboiled condition to observe the milling performance using the miller practices.

Achievement/Findings:

Excessive breakage was observed in BADC rice mill when premium quality paddy was processed as unparboiled condition due to use of friction type polisher. Premium quality paddy could be milled in auto rice mill as unparboiled condition. Head rice recovery might increase for the larger sample size. About 7% head rice recovery can be increased if paddy was processed as half-parboiled condition.
