Development of Seed Storage Cocoon by Indigenous Materials

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

BRRI dhan28 was stored in plastic drum, low cost cocoon and loaded with 60 kg, 160 kg respectively. Over the four months of study germination capacity ranged from 91-89% for both the storage structure. Insects infestation was found higher in cocoon (56 live borers and 35 dead borer per kg and 8 live weevils per kg) compared to that of plastic drum (10 live and 20 dead borers per kg). Initial moisture content was 13% (w.b.). During these four months, it varied from 13 to 13.20% for plastic drum and 13 to 13.30% for cocoon. The performance of plastic drum was good in terms of seed viability, temperature and insects infestations and that of low cost cocoon was satisfactory.

Objectives:

To develop low cost seed storage cocoon and study its performance

Methodology:

Plastic drum, locally made low-cost Cocoon (size 3.0- 2,2.5), Paddy, Digital thermometer and thermocouple, hygrometer and moisture meter were used in the experiment. Plastic drum was bought from the market and a Cocoon was made by two ply rexin sheet in the size of 3.0??2??2.5? and a nylon cloth placed inside the Cocoon for more protection of moisture. A long zipper was placed at the top edges of the Cocoon for easy loading and unloading of the paddy seeds. BRRI dhan28 was dried and cleaned and the cocoon was set up at the Post harvest Laboratory in the second week of June, 2007. Paddy was loaded in plastic drum in bulk condition and for cocoon paddy was firstly loaded in small gunny bag then the gunny bags were put inside the Cocoon. The amount of paddy stored in plastic drum and cocoon was 60 kg and 160 kg respectively. Samples from each structure were collected at every month. Collected samples were analyzed for moisture content, seed viability, insect population, relative humidity and thousand grain mass (TGM).

Achievement/Findings:

Maximum moisture uptake was found in Cocoon (13.3% wb). Insect infestation was higher in Cocoon (56 no. live borer/kg and 8 no. live weevil/kg, 35 no dead borer/kg). Germination percentage ranged from 91 to 89 for both the structures. There is possibility of air leakage into the Cocoon through zipper joint which attributed to the increase of insects population inside the Cocoon. From the above study, the performance of plastic drum was good in terms of seed viability, temperature and insects infestations and the performance of low cost Cocoon was satisfactory.
