Improvement of Efficiency of Rice Parboiling Boiler

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The steam-husk ratio was found to be 1.03 and 1.35 before and after insulation, respectively. The result indicates that about 23.6% of rice husk could be saved simply by incorporating proper insulation on the rice parboiling system. Thermal efficiency had been raised by 7%. The insulated system does not only save the husk but also improve the work environment which reduces the worker health hazards.

Objectives:

To save the rice husk fuel by increasing the boiler efficiency

Methodology:

In this experiment the effect of insulation on boiler and steam pipe was tested. The thermal efficiency of steam generator was measured as indicator to show the performance of insulation. A rice mill at Kaliakoir was selected to perform the experiment. The steam generator and steam pipe was not insulated. At first the thermal efficiency of the insulated system was measured. The system was insulated with glass wool. Then the thermal efficiency of the system was measured again to compare the performance of the insulation on thermal efficiency. The steam generator was filled up with water to a predetermined level by a water pump. The water level was checked with a dipstick made from bamboo or wood or by siphon tube arrangement. After measuring the water level the valve on the filling spigot was closed. Sufficient amount of rice husk was pilled up near the furnace. The quantity of husk was weighed with a spring balance to quantify the exact amount consumed for parboiling purpose. After all the paddy was parboiled, the remaining husk fuel was weighed again. The difference determined the actual amount of husk consumed for parboiling. The efficiencies of the steam vessel/boilers were determined from the volume of water evaporated and the quantity of husk fired.

Achievement/Findings:

There was a significant effect of the insulation on the improvement of energy efficiency of rice parboiling system to save rice husk energy. The technology could be transferred to save rice husk resource and to improve the working environment of the rice mill premises.
