Industrial and Farm Level Extension of Agricultural Machinery

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

During the year 2006-07, a total of 58 demonstration cum informal training for BRRI developed machinery (BRRI rice-wheat reaper, BRRI rice-wheat thresher, BRRI open drum thresher, BRRI winnower, BRRI weeder and BRRI dryer) were conducted at different places in Mymensingh, Gazipur, Dhaka, Kishoregonj, Comilla, Feni, Noakhali, Chandpur, Madaripur, Kushtia, Faridpur, Natore, Rangpur, Dinajpur, Thakurgoan and Rajshahi districts in Aman '06, wheat '07 and Boro '07 seasons. About 1853 participants including farmers both male and female, farm machinery operators, researchers and Sub Assistant Agricultural Officer (SAAO) attended the programmes. Among them about 120 no. of female farmers attended the programme. During demonstration, about 27 acres of paddy was harvested by BRRI rice-wheat reaper and about 86 tons of paddy was threshed by using BRRI rice-wheat thresher (ODT, TH-7 and TH-8). More than 1300 kg of paddy was dried in the farmer's house at Jatra Shidhi of Feni sadar upazila in Boro and Aus 2007 seasons. About 4.5 tons of threshed paddy was also winnowed in Rajshahi area.

Objectives:

1. To disseminate BRRI developed farm machinery to the farmer's field.

2. To create awareness among the farmers toward farm machinery use

3. To improve the operational skill of the farmers on the use of farm machinery

Methodology:

Site selection Selection of sites was made on the basis of the following criteria: • Easily accessible. • High cropping intensity area. • An area of labour shortage (Suburb area, where labourer migrate to the urban area and boarder area, where they might be engaged in other off farm job). • Thresher (Open drum, TH-7), Power tiller operated reaper. Winnower and Weeder were demonstrated to the farmers field during crop production seasons of T. Aman, Wheat, Boro and T. Aus. Method of demonstration cum training At each programme, altogether 30 participants mostly farmers both male and female were invited as trainee for day long demonstration cum training programme. DAE officials, NGO workers, local elite, manufacturers and machinery operators were also present. DAE officials were also invited to motivate the farmers towards mechanization. Introductory sessions were arranged to familiarize the machine performance, unit price, profitability over traditional practices, operation, repair and maintenance of the machine. Machines were operated before the participants for about 1-2 hours. Most of the trainee operated the demonstrated machines one by one. Discussion session was arranged to collect participant’s reaction on the prospects and drawbacks of the machines. Short questionnaire was supplied to the participants asking their opinion/comments on machine performance. Afterwards data were analyzed and discussion were made. After completion of the training program a folder and hand note on BRRI machine and leaflets were distributed among the participants.

Achievement/Findings:

Through the demonstration and training programme, the awareness among the farmers on the benefit of using of BRRI farm machinery was created. More farmers have had using BRRI machines including weeder and thresher. As a result the use of agricultural machinery had been increasing day by day.
