Evaluation of Betel Leaf Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at Spices Research Centre, BARI, Shibgonj, Bogra during September, 2011 to May, 2012. Twenty three (23) different betel leaf germplasm were collected from different parts of Bangladesh and evaluated based on their leaf characters. Among the germplasm, BL 003, BL 004, BL 007, BL 020, BL 021, BL 022 and BL 023 showed the best leaf size and shape morphologically.

Objectives:

To characterize and evaluate the betel leaf germplasms with other desirable characters for variety development.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted with twenty three (23) germplasms (BL 001, BL 002, BL 003, BL 004, BL 005, BL 006, BL 007, BL 008, BL 009, BL 010, BL 011, BL 012, BL 013, BL 014, BL 015, BL 016, BL 017, BL 018, BL 019, BL 020, BL 021, BL 022 and BL 023) of betel leaf along with BARI Pan-1 and BARI Pan-2 at Spices Research Centre, Bogra during September, 2011 to May, 2012. The transplantation of betel leaf cuttings were done on March, 2010. Weeding and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. The crop was harvested on 23 May, 2012. Data on different morphological characters were collected and analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

Significant differences were observed among the betel leaf germplasm in respect of leaf shape and size. The longest leaf (16.97 cm) was recorded in BL 003 where as the short length (12.20 cm) of leaf was recorded from BL 006. The highest leaf breadth (15.52 cm) was recorded in BL 003 where as the lowest leaf breadth (10.47cm) was recorded from BL 006. The highest leaf area (160.4 cm²) was observed from BL 003 followed by BL 020 (160.00 cm²) and BL 0021 (159.1cm²), respectively where as the lowest leaf area (113.1cm²) was found from BL 001. The highest leaf weight (4.51gm) was found from BL 021 followed by BL 003 (4.35gm) and the lowest leaf weight (2.42gm) was recorded from BL 006. The maximum number (18.89) of leaves per meter length were obtained from BL 023 where as the lowest number (16.56) of leaves were found from BL 002 and BL 021. Among the germplasm, BL 003, BL 004, BL 007, BL 0020, BL 021, BL 022 and BL 023 showed the best leaf size and shape morphologically. The experiment needs to be repeated further for the confirmation of results.
