A Comparative Study of the Quality of Paddy Stored in Different Types of Structure

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

BRRI dhan 28 was stored in steel drum, plastic drum, low cost cocoon and gunny bag in the amount of 120 kg, 70 kg, 176 kg and 50 kg respectively. Over the three months of study germination capacity was ranged from 95-94% for steel drum, 95-94% for plastic drum, 95-91% for low cost cocoon and 95-88% for gunny bag. Maximum insects infestation was found in cocoon (187 live borer/kg and 131 dead borer/kg and 16 live weevil/kg) and lowest in plastic drum (45 dead borer/kg). Initial moisture content was 11.92% (wet basis), after three months it varied from 11.92-11.50 % for steel drum, 11.92 to 11.67% for plastic drum, 11.92 to 12% for cocoon and 11.92 to 13.26 % for gunny bag. The performance of steel and plastic drum was found better for paddy seed storage in terms of germination capacity, moisture content, and insects infestation.

Objectives:

To study the performance of steel drum, plastic drum and low cost Cocoon as seed storage structure.

Methodology:

Steel drum, plastic drum, locally made low-cost Cocoon (size 3.0? ? 2? ? 2.5?), Gunny bag, Paddy, Digital thermometer and thermocouple, Hygrometer and moisture meter. Steel drum and plastic drum and gunny bag bought from the market and Cocoon was made by two ply rexin sheet in the size of 3.0??2??2.5? and a nylon cloth placed inside the cocoon for more protection of moisture. A long zipper was placed top edges of the Cocoon for easy loading and unloading of paddy. Two month old BRRI dhan 28 was collected from BRRI central store. The experiment was set up at the Postharvest Laboratory in the First week of July, 2003. Paddy was weighed in spring balance and loaded in Steel drum, Plastic drum, Gunny bag and for Cocoon paddy was firstly loaded in small gunny bag then it put inside the Cocoon. The amount of paddy stored in steel drum, plastic drum, cocoon and gunny bag was 120 kg, 70 kg, 176 kg and 50 kg respectively. Samples from each structure were collected on monthly interval. Collected Samples were analyzed for moisture content, seed viability, insect's population relative humidity and thousand grain mass (TG).

Achievement/Findings:

Maximum moisture uptake was found in gunny bag (13.26% w.b.) due to easy contact with the ambient air. Insect infestation was highest in the cocoon (187 live borer/kg and 16 live weevil/kg, 131 dead borer/kg) and lowest in the plastic drum (nil live insects and 45 dead borer/kg). Highest germination percentage observed in steel drum and plastic drum (94%) and lowest in gunny bag (88%) over three months of study. There was a possibility of air leakage into the cocoon through zipper joint which attributed to the increase of insects population inside the cocoon.
