Influence of Storage Time on Quality of Paddy Stored in Different Light Structure Film Bags

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Seed viability of BR 22 paddy was examined in three different light film lamofoil (LF), normal polyfilm (PF) and color polyfilm (PF) bags. Seed viability was maintained at satisfactory level above 80% up-to 12 months of storage while steeply decreased after 12 months and was recorded only 6% in PF and 2% in CPF. However, it remained 75 % in the LF bag.

Objectives:

To find out the suitable storage structure for maintaining the good quality of paddy seed

Methodology:

Freshly harvested paddy (BR 22) was collected from the BRRI Farm Management Division. The paddy was sun dried on a concrete floor up to 11.2 % (w.b.) moisture content. Paddy was cleaned to remove foreign matter, unfilled and immature grain. About 500 g paddy sample was packed in each lamofoil, polyfilm and color polyfilm bag. These three different film bags were sealed and stored in the metal container at ambient condition in the postharvest laboratory. The paddy samples were collected from the stored bags and moisture content and viability of paddy were examined in each month.

Achievement/Findings:

Seed viability was maintained at satisfactory level (above 80%) in all of the three light film bags for storage duration of 12 months. However, lamofoil film bag showed the best performance (75%) even after 14 months of storage due to its extreme impermeable nature for moisture and oxygen. Lamofoil film bags can be recommended for storage of paddy in longer period. Further investigation could be needed to store paddy and other seed at farm level in 10 kg bags.
