BRRI weeder, BRRI open drum thresher and BRRI rice-wheat thresher (TH7) were demonstrated in 3 unions under sadar upazilla of Chapai Nawabganj district. Farmers expressed satisfaction on the performance of BRRI weeder. Long straw was retained when paddy was threshed by BRRI open drum threshers whereas; straw was chopped into pieces by BRRI rice-wheat threshers. The farmers of Chapai Nawabganj area preferred long straw. So, most of the farmers preferred BRRI open drum thresher than BRRI rice-wheat thresher (TH7). Two varieties of fine rice i.e. BRRI dhan37 and 38 were used in the experiment. The initial moisture content of BRRI dhan37 and BRRI dhan38 were 13.39 and 12.86 percents respectively. The highest crushing strengths of BRRI dhan37 and BRRI dhan38 were found 8.0 and 6.76 kgf, respectively at 3 days of drying and tempering which are attributed to the proper milling condition for better head rice recovery. Kernel translucency increased with drying duration irrespective of the variety. The highest milling yield of BRRI dhan37 was 60.2 % when samples were dried for 4 days and that of BRRI dhan38 was 60.1 % when samples were dried for 3 days.

1. Dissemination of BRRI developed farm machinery among the farmers.

2.Improvement of fine rice processing technology in automatic mills

BRRI weeder, BRRI Open drum thresher and BRRI rice-wheat thresher (TH7) were demonstrated in different villages under sadar upazilla of Chapai Nawabgonj district. Farmers of all categories (male and female); Deputy Director, Upazilla Agricultural Officer, Senior Agricultural officer, DAE; Agricultural Advisor, PROVA; Chief Scientific Officer, BRRI Regional Station, Rajshahi and other DAE official were present to observe the field performance of BRRI machinery. Participant’s opinion regarding field performance of thresher were collected through a questionnaire. Preliminary survey on the processing of aromatic rice was conducted in six automatic mills in Chapai Nawabganj and Naogaon districts. Industry level research on fine rice processing was conducted in the Minar auto rice mill, Namosankarbati area of Chapai Nawabganj. Two varieties of fine rice i.e. BRRI dhan37 and BRRI dhan38 were used in the experiment. The paddy was procured from the growers during January 2003 and kept in the mill yard storehouse for about two months. The initial moisture contents of BRRI dhan37 and BRRI dhan38 were 13.93 and 12.86 percent respectively. The temperature and relative humidity ranged from 34 to 42°C and 42 to 79%, respectively, at 10:00 and 13:00 hours in the last week of May, 2003. During sun drying of paddy, moisture content, crushing strength and kernel translucency values were recorded everyday. Following treatments were conducted replicated thrice. T1= 4 hours drying followed by 20 hrs tempering by stacking for 3 days; T2= 4 hours drying followed by 20 hrs tempering by stacking for 4 days; T3= 4 hours drying followed by 20 hrs tempering by stacking for 5 days; T4= 4 hours drying followed by 20 hrs tempering by stacking for 6 days.

a) BRRI machinery demonstration • Farmers preferred BRRI open drum thresher than BRRI rice wheat thresher (TH7), because they want long unbroken straw after threshing. • In the beginning adoption of BRRI weeder suffered as the farmers do not practice in line transplanting method. • Farmers and operators are highly satisfied on training they received from the project. • Demonstrations of BRRI machine have created awareness among the farmers. b) Fine aromatic rice processing: • Milling yield of long grain rice (BRRI dhan37 and 38) was about 60 %. • Everyday 4 hours drying at 340C-420C temperatures followed by tempering for 3 to 4 days produced maximum milling yield for both the varieties. • Milling yield decreased after three days of drying for both the varieties. • Crushing strength of both the varieties increased up to 3 days of drying and decreased for successive days of drying • The crushing strength of BRRI dhan37 was greater than that of BRRI dhan38 irrespective of the drying duration. • Kernel translucency increased with drying duration irrespective of the variety. • The highest head rice recovery based on milled rice, of BRRI dhan37 was 90.4% when samples were dried for 4 days whereas that of BRRI dhan38 was 84.1% when samples were dried for 3 days. • The head rice recovery of BRRI dhan37 was more than that of BRRI dhan38 irrespective of drying duration.
