Design and Development of an Improved Boiler and a Furnace for Parboiling of Paddy

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The new improved furnace and boiler showed higher efficiency, low pollution, comfortable, clean and safer working environment and about 50% rice husk could be saved. Saved rice husk could be briquetted and the bran could be used as animal or poultry feed. Local “mistries” could be trained to construct the furnace. Paddy parboiling time was half the time needed in conventional system. The safety valve opens at high pressure and ensures a safer operation.

Objectives:

1. To improve efficiency of rice husk combustion in rice processing with a particular focus on small rural mills in Bangladesh

2. To save the rice husk fuel for poor people

3. To study the fuel use, steam production and boiler efficiency

Methodology:

Design criteria of new boiler • Provide optimum steam pressure to reduce steaming time of paddy; • Optimum volume of steam vessel required for small rice mill; • Optimum steam production rate for easy operation; • Cost minimization, easy fabrication locally; and • Ensuring safe operation. Material required for boiler • M/S sheet 5 mm thick • Safety valve • Temperature meter • Pressure gauge • Control valves and other necessary accessories Design criteria of furnace • Maximum heating area; • Availability of oxygen; • Maximum combustion and reduction of CO in flue gas; • Optimum draft with chimney; • Continuing with traditional manual feeding; and • Comfortable and safer working environment. Material required for furnace • Bricks, Clay, Sand, Cement • Chimney made of m/s sheet Fabrication and installation of boiler and furnace The boiler was fabricated by Modern Erection Limited, Dhaka according to the design specification given by the project consultant TERI, India. For installation of boiler, a contract sign was made between BRRI and M/S Nonia Rice Mill, Bilashpur, Gazipur. The furnace was constructed locally with direction of BRRI and TERI scientists. Safety measures For safe operation a pressure gauge, temperature meter and safety valve were provided, and the safe pressure level was set at 1.75 kg/cm2. When the pressure inside the boiler goes beyond the set pressure, the valve releases the pressure and safety was ensured. Data collection Final specification of boiler and furnace after fabrication and installation were measured. Steam production rate, fuel consumption and boiler efficiency were determined.

Achievement/Findings:

• Higher efficiency and low pollution • The start-up time for the furnace was about 60 minutes as in conventional furnaces • Comfortable, clean and safer working environment • Saving of 50% rice husk • The furnace could be operated using rice husk alone. • The furnace could accept rice husk that was either from half-boiled or full-boiled paddy. • Saved rice husk could be briquetted and the bran could be used as animal or poultry feed • Briquettes could be used for replacing fuel wood or for gasification purpose • It was a practically and economically viable technology • Local “mistries” can be trained to construct the furnace • Paddy parboiling time was half the time needed in conventional system • Low feed rate of rice husk provides easiness to the furnace operator • The safety valve opens at high pressure and ensures a safer operation
