Alternative Use of Rice Husk Ash (rha)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

RHA appears to possess a spectrum of excellent properties such as high surface area, good purity, cheapness, low crystallinity, easily processed comparable to other popular pozzolanas, suggesting that it could be used as a blending component in cement by replacing OPC to a certain percent. Only 60% of the compressive strength of OPC block was obtained from blocks made of rice husk ash collected from traditional furnace. Whereas, 75% of the compressive strength of OPC block was obtained from the blocks made of rice husk ash collected from improved furnace. In another test 91% of the compressive strength of OPC block was obtained from the blocks made of ground rice husk ash collected from improved furnace.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Husk Samples collection Eight rice husk samples were collected from different rice mills located in the major rice processing areas of Bangladesh. Rice husks from both parboiled and un-parboiled processes were taken of which two samples were from Engleberg hullers and six samples were from auto rice mills containing rubber roll hullers. Rice Husk Ash (RHA) Samples collection Fourteen RHA samples were collected from different rice processing zones of Bangladesh. The RHA samples were collected from simple traditional furnaces where no effort was made to control the properties of RHA. The RHA samples were sieved by 2 mm sieves to remove foreign matters, stones, clods, iron nails and other impurities. Characterization of Husk Samples To characterise the husk samples moisture content, volatile matter content and ash content were determined. The thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) technique was applied to determine the ash and volatile matter content of the husk samples at normal air and nitrogen gas chamber. Characterisation of RHA Samples The following parameters were determined to characterise the ash samples: Moisture content, particle size distribution, X-ray diffraction analysis, CHN (Carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen) analysis, morphology, SEM (Scanning electron microscopy), surface area, bulk density of ash particles, Fourier transform infra-red (FT-IR) spectroscopy for molecular structure of silica. Determination of compressive strength of OPC-RHA blended cement blocks British Standard cement blocks were prepared by replacing 10%, 20% and 30% weight of OPC by RHA. Ottowa sand and was used to make the standard blocks. The OPC-RHA blocks were left for natural curing and compressive strength was determined under a universal testing machine at DUET Lab for 14, 21, and 28 days of natural curing. A control sample was made to verify the OPC-RHA strength. The replication of the sample was three.
