Survey on the Quality and Acceptability of Rice Straw Obtained from Machine Threshing

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Straw obtained from mechanical thresher could be preserved and heaped as usual. Water cannot penetrate into the heap if properly heaped. Straw could be used as animal feed. But, cattle consumed more because the straw becomes very soft.

Objectives:

To study the quality and acceptability of straw obtained from mechanical threshing.

Methodology:

A questionnaire was prepared to collect data from the actual user of BRRI rice-wheat thresher. In the Boro' 03 season, BRRI rice-wheat thresher was extensively used on rental basis at Ullasonala, Gaibandaha district. Data were collected from surrounding villages in Gainbandha district where BRRI rice-wheat thresher (TH7) was extensively used in last Boro season. For the first time, farmers of Gaibandha district use the BRRI rice-wheat thresher to thresh their rice crop. Data were collected from 19 users after 4 months of threshing. The data were analysed and presented in Table 16. Volume of heap was calculated by using following formula. Assuming the heap a spherical head Volume of heap = Volume of cylindrical portion + Volume of hemispherical portion = ?r2 (h-r) + ¾ ? X ½ = ?r2(h-r) + 3/8 r) = ?r2 (h-5/8r)
