Extension and Promotion of BRRI Rice Wheat Reaper in Tangail District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A total of 300 beneficiaries including farmers and farm family, manufacturer, mechanic and operators, local workshops, spare parts seller, NGOs and importers were directly benefited by the project funded by REFPI-BAU/DFID. One reverse system Power tiller mounted reaper and one self-propelled reaper was developed through the project. Linkages were developed among GO, NGO, workshops, manufacturer to sustain the technology in the farmers field.

Objectives:

Effective use of BRRI reaper to overcome current human power shortage

Methodology:

BRRI enlisted manufacturer Uttaran Engineering Workshop, Kalitola, Dinajpur was selected to fabricate BRRI rice wheat reaper. One sell-propelled light weight china model reaper was produced from the importer AAMAREX Ltd. Dhaka. A self-propelled KUBOTA model reaper was collected from Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh. Improvement works on reaper were done with the help of local workshop mechanics. Performance test of each reaper was conducted and evaluated before going to the field demonstration. Reaper was demonstrated in the farmers' field among the farmers, manufacturer, university professor, local chairman, DAE officials, BARI officials and REFPI personnel. KUBOTA model self-propelled reaper 1. Highly appreciated by the farmers due to considering its lighter weight 2. Easily portable from one plot to another 3. Cutting performance was excellent 4. 85% farmers' wanted to use it in rental basis with price Tk. 1123.00 per ha 5. Purchasing price was excessively high (Tk. 85,000/unit) BRRI model PT mounted Reaper 1. BRRI model reaper needs extra labour to gather scattered harvested crop 2. Length of the reaper (PT + Reaper) is high which is difficult to turn around the small field 3. 60 - 70% farmers wanted to use it by rental basis with Tk. 748.00 per ha Reverse system PT mounted reaper 1. Maneuverability is difficult 2. This machine was not properly balanced 3. Difficult to change gear position 4. It was possible to harvest in dry land 5. Farmers wanted to use it by rental basis with Tk. 748.00 per ha China model self-propelled reaper 1. Reaper was smaller in size which could not delivery the harvested crop smoothly 2. The reaper was not fit in the existing field condition 3. Poor quality material was used to fabricate the reaper 4. Small petrol engine could not develop sufficient torque to operate the reaper in muddy field

Achievement/Findings:

Considering the farmer's reaction, self-propelled reaper like Kubota was developed. The main characteristics of the reaper are as follows: 1. Self-propelled reaper was developed by using locally available raw materials 2. Possible to supply with cheaper prices (Tk. 35,000 - 40,000) 3. Easily portable from plot to plot due to its lighter weight (130 kg) 4. It could be repaired in the local workshops
