Influence of Storage Time on Quality of Paddy Stored in Different Light Structure Film Bags

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

BR 22, paddy was stored for five months in three different light film bags, lamofoil (LF), normal polyfilm (PF) and color PF bags. The germination was maintained well in LF, PF bag and color PF bags. The quality of paddy stored in steel drum, plastic drum, dole and gunny bag was observed at Postharvest laboratory, BRRI. The germination capacity ranged from 96 to 94% in steel drum, no change in plastic drum (96%), 96 to 84 % in dole, and 96 to70 % in gunny bag during the storage period. Weight loss in steel drum, plastic drum, dole and gunny bag were 2.82 %, 2.92 %, 3.80 %, and 4.04 % respectively. Maximum weight loss was found in gunny bag. Plastic drum and steel drum may be used for storage of paddy seed for more than 5 months without much deterioration of seed viability.

Objectives:

To find out the suitable light structure film bag for maintaining the good quality of paddy seed

Methodology:

Freshly harvested paddy, BR 28 was collected from the farm management division (FMD). The paddy was cleaned and sun dried up to 11.2 % moisture content. Paddy was analyzed for moisture content, 1000-grain weight, and viability. Then 500 g paddy sample was packed in three different light film bags, sealed and stored in the postharvest laboratory room at ambient conditions. These light film bags are lamofoil (LF), polyfilm (PF) and color polyfilm (CPF).
