Effect of Drum Speed of a BRRI Power Thresher (th7) on the Quality of Paddy

For machine threshing of paddy, seed viability was maintained higher at lower threshing speed (370 rpm) compared to higher speed (450 and 470 rpm).

Objectives:

To find out the optimum drum speed of power thresher (TH7) for storing the good quality of viable seed

Methodology:

Paddy, BRRI dhan39 was collected from the Rice Farming System division. It was threshed by mechanical thresher (TH7) at different drum speeds 370, 450 and 470 rpm respectively by controlling the engine lever. Threshing by the drum beating was the control. The mechanical and drum threshed paddy was cleaned and sun dried at the safe moisture content (12.2 to 12.7%) for the prolonged storage. Then it was stored in poly film confined in the jute bags. At 0, 3, 5 and 6 months of storage, paddy samples were analyzed for moisture content and germination to assess the seed quality.

Achievement/Findings:

The seed viability was found 85-90% after four months of storage in all the speed of TH 7 thresher. But seed viability was maintained 83% up to six months at 370 rpm drum speed of TH7 thresher. Therefore, optimum drum speed of BRRI power thresher (TH 7) should be investigated for other varieties at different speed for keeping good seed viability during prolonged storage (six months).
