Comparative Study of the Quality of Paddy Stored in Different Types of Structure

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Maximum moisture uptake was found in gunny bag (13.2 % m.c.) due to easy contact with the ambient air. Insect infestation was highest in the gunny bag (194 no/kg live, 126 no/kg dead) and lowest in the plastic drum (3 no/kg live, 65 no/kg dead). Lowest germination percentage was recorded in gunny bag (70%) and highest germination percentage in plastic drum (96%) over the storage period. Thousand grain mass was recorded lowest in gunny bag (18.72 gm) and highest in steel drum (18.97 gm) over the storage period. Plastic drum and Steel drum could be used for storage of paddy seed for more than five months without deterioration of seed viability.

Objectives:

1.To observe the performance of different storage structures

2.To study the seed quality in terms of germination capacity, moisture content, weight loss, and insect infestation stored in different types of structures.

Methodology:

Steel drum, Plastic drum, dole and gunny bag bought from the market and three months old BR 22 paddy was collected from BRRI central store for this study. The storage experiment was set up at Postharvest laboratory in the last week of April, 2002. Paddy, BR 22 was weighed in spring balance and loaded to each of the structures namely steel drum, plastic drum, dole made of woven split bamboo and plastered with cow dung, and two standard gunny bags. These storage structures were placed on the wooden dunnage inside the Postharvest laboratory building of BRRI. The amount of paddy stored in steel drum, plastic drum, dole and gunny bag were 126, 75.4, 196 and 120 kg respectively. Samples from each structure were collected on monthly interval. Collected samples were analyzed and data on moisture content, seed viability, insects population and thousand grains mass (TGM) were recorded.

Initial moisture content and germination capacity of stored paddy was 11.2% and 96% respectively. Thousand grain mass was 19.52 gm and insect infestation was 18 no/kg live and 13 no/kg dead respectively. The temperature and moisture content of the stored grain varied with time because of changing weather condition. During storage period, the average ambient temperature of these structures was slightly higher than average grain mass temperature stored in different structures. But in the third to fifth month of storage, the grain mass temperature inside the dole was higher than the average ambient temperature. This is because of larger size of the container and higher concentration of insects. Maximum fluctuation of temperatures was observed in dole and gunny bag because of comparative free air movement through the porous wall of Split bamboo and jute fibre. Three months old grain was infested by borer (Rhyzopertha dominica) and weevil (Sitophilus oryzae) before storage in the four types of storage structure. Heat developed during storage was mainly due to the respiration of insects. Insect infestation was increased with storage time. Maximum infestation was found in gunny bag. In fifth and sixth month insect infestation in plastic drum was decreased.
