Benefits from Improved Rice Husk Combustion Efficiency

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted under BRRI-NRI project to study the present status of existing rice parboiling systems in Bangladesh. The most detrimental matter in existing parboiling unit is the safety. Mill owners were not conscious about the safety measures. Only 3 out of 17 number of boiler were found having proper safety measures. Steam-husk ratio was found to be 0.46-2.83. The average steam production was found to be 104-799 kg/hr. The steam pressure was found to be 1.13-1.80 kg/cm2. Paddy-steam ratio was found to be 6.04-13.46. In most cases the boiler efficiency was very poor (9.52-35 %), but very few cases it was found satisfactory level (upto 58.86 %). The existing parboiling units can parboil 4500-16800 kg paddy/batch. There is a lot of scope to improve the boiler and furnace efficiency and thus rice husk could be saved at a considerable amount.

Objectives:

i) To study the specification on boiler vessels, steaming bin and soaking pit

ii) To survey the safety measures of boiler

iii) To collect information on present practices of rice parboiling system

iv) To record the time and labour distribution for rice parboiling

v) To study the fuel use, steam production and boiler efficiency

Methodology:

Site selection Rice mills were selected from different sites of Bangladesh where the cluster of rice mills were situated. Mills were selected mainly based on rice processing zone. Five districts were covered in this study viz. Dinajpur, Nawabganj, Naogaon, Bogra and Mymensingh. Selection criteria of boiler In Bangladesh, most of the boilers used for parboiling paddy were locally made with mild steel sheet. There were no safety measures and any other precautions in boiler operation. To fulfill the objective of the study, the most popular unsafe boilers were selected. According to the shape and size, the available boilers are (i) round and (ii) half round with flat bottom. Material and Instrument : The following materials and instruments were used to complete the study of rice mill: i)Temperature meter, ii) Spring Balance, iii) Stop watch, iv) Steel tape, v) Slide calipers, vi) Calculator, vii) Moisture meter, viii) Camera and ix) Torch Light Specifications of different physical structures in parboiling system The following dimensions were measured: Boiler: length, diameter and wall thickness Soaking house: length, breadth and depth Parboiling bin: Length and diameter Safety measures Safety measures plays a great role in control of boiler operation, efficient use of fuel and more over in security of operators life from accidents. Different safety measures such as safety valve, pressure gauge, temperature meter and insulation were observed and recorded during the study.

Achievement/Findings:

There was no standard design and specification of boiler. People did not conscious about safety measures. Local Mistry fabricated the boiler as their own idea. Boiler vessel and steaming bin was made of m/s sheet. The range of steam-fuel ratio was very high. The range of steam production was very high. Fuel feed rate was not uniform, therefore, there was a variation of steam pressure in boiler during operation Paddy-steam ratio varied widely. Boiler efficiency ranged was very high and in most cases it was very poor. Present parboiling unit processed 120-450 md of paddy per batch.
