Popularizing BRRI Developed Agricultural Machinery to Augment Mechanized Rice Cultivation in Bangladesh (pamp)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

One hundred seventy six demonstrations were conducted with BRRI weeder, BRRI Rice-Wheat reaper, BRRI Rice-Wheat thresher, BRRI winnower and BRRI chula during wheat/paddy harvesting seasons under PAMP programme. On an average over 70% farmers expressed satisfaction on the performance of BRRI weeder, BRRI Rice-Wheat reaper, BRRI Rice-Wheat thresher and BRRI chula. As a result about 60 numbers of BRRI threshers were sold to the farmers by the manufactures in Thuakurgaon and Dinajpur districts. More than 90% farmers wanted to purchase BRRI machines. Participants did not encounter any problems to operate BRRI machines. Most farmers bided a lower price than the actual price of the machines. However, about 90-95% of the farmers expressed their options to use BRRI Rice-Wheat reaper, BRRI Rice-Wheat thresher on rental basis. All of the farmers attended the demonstration agreed to use BRRI chula.

Objectives:

1. To popularize BRRI developed machineries throughout the country (21 districts)

2. To create awareness of the farmers toward mechanization

3. To motivate the local entrepreneurs to manufacture BRRI developed machinery

4. To refine the prototype on the basis of farmers comments

Methodology:

Site Selection Selection of sites were made on the basis of the following criteria: • easily accessible • of high cropping intensity area • an area of labour shortage (Suburb area, where labourer migrate to the urban area and Boarder area, where they might be engaged in other off farm job). b) Record of farmer’s opinion on the machine performance An interview schedule was prepared and respondents were asked questions relating to social acceptability, technical performance, profitability/social benefits, effectiveness of communication and training programs, private entrepreneurship possibility for equipment repair and maintenance and maintenance needs of the equipment. c) Method of demonstration At each site, at least 50 participants mostly farmers, DAE officials, manufacturers and NGO workers were invited. Introductory sessions were arranged to familiarize the machine performance, unit price, profitability over traditional practices, operation, repair and maintenance of the machine. Machines were operated before the participants at least for half an hour. Discussion session was arranged to collect participant’s reaction on the prospects and drawbacks of the machines. Short questionnaire was supplied to the participants asking their opinion/comments on machine performance. Afterwards data were analysed and discussions were made.

Achievement/Findings:

Through conducting farm level demonstration, the following benefits were achieved: i) Awareness on farm machinery among the farmers was developed. ii) Farmers’ knowledge on operation, repair and maintenance was improved. iii) Importance of timely planting, harvesting and threshing was demonstrated to the farmers through the use of machinery. iv) With the expansion of farm machinery in the farmers’ field, repair and maintenance facilities would be developed in the rural areas and thus rural peoples income would be generated. v) Rental service of farm machinery will develop private sector business enterprises vi) Local manufacturing of farm machinery would be encouraged.
