Study the Effect of Harvesting Time After Maturity on Rice Milling Yield

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Effect of harvesting time on the milling yield was studied for three rice varieties, BR11, BR22 and BRRI dhan32. The results showed that milling yield increased at optimum maturity, while decreased after maturity irrespective of the varieties. Milling yield was found to be 66 to 70%. Broken grains were increased for all the three varieties at reduced moisture contents. The reason of decreasing in head rice was due to rewetting (during night) and drying (during day) of paddy, which causes development of internal fissure of grain. Head rice recovery was lower in BR11 than those of other two varieties. This might be due to non-uniform ripening occurred in BR11.

Methodology:

Three rice varieties (BR-11, BR-22 and BRRI dhan32) were grown in the BRRI farm at Joydebpur. The date of sowing and transplanting were same for all the three varieties. Paddy was harvested at weekly interval for 35 days. The first harvest was done one week before maturity (80% grain was in straw colour, 20% was in hard dough stage). After harvesting, paddy was threshed by pedal thresher. The threshed paddy was cleaned and sun dried to 12.9-13.9%. Then it was stored in polybag impregnated in the jute bag (PJUB) at ambient conditions. The paddy samples were milled at laboratory Satake husking and polishing machine for analyzing of milling yield, head and broken rice recovery.

Achievement/Findings:

It could be concluded from the result that milling yield and quality of milled rice could be increased by harvesting paddy at optimum maturity. Milling losses can also be minimized at optimum maturity condition of rice harvesting.
