Under-ground pit storage of paddy was studied during dry and wet seasons at BRRI Gazipur in 2001. It was observed that moisture condensation occurred in the pit storage during wet season (May to August) and seed viability was totally lost, while viability was maintained at satisfactory level for dry season (February to April).

 To observe the viability of stored paddy

The experiment was conducted during dry and wet period, 2001. The size of under ground pit was 1.5 m X 1.5 m X 2.0 m. 80 kg of Paddy, (BR-11 variety) was packed in jute bags and placed in the under-ground pit for three months in the dry season (February to April). 120 kg of paddy, (BR-26 variety) was packed in jute bags and stored for three months in the wet season (May to August). Samples were taken from the pit storage and control storage at the end of storage period. Samples were analyzed and data on moisture content, viability and insect population were recorded.

Paddy storage in the under ground pit is suitable for dry period. The paddy storage in under ground pit during wet period is not possible in the Bangladesh context. For the dry period (November to April) further investigate is needed to confirm the above test results.
