Benefits from Improved Rice Husk Combustion Efficiency (dfid/nri)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study showed that 55%, 25% and 12% mills were found to be operated by owners, beparies and joint operation respectively. Only 8% mills were operated by leasing group. Women made up 45% of the work force but their wages were less than that of male workers. Women were paid TK.1/40 kg of paddy processing plus broken rice while men were paid TK.18-20 for processing the same amount of paddy. There are different designs of boilers found at different locations of Bangladesh and the designs are built based on the capabilities of local mistrys. Most of the boilers were found unsafe for the operators. Some casualties were reported with killing of operators, but the owners were found unconcerned about the death of operators because the liabilities do not always go to him due to provision of different arrangement of mills operation. Most owners were found to continue this system as long as the reinforcement of Boiler Acts. Ten percent of the paddy husks were used for briquette making. Improvement of furnace efficiency is imperative to save husk for briquette making .The rice husk briquetting was found to be a profitable business even husk is short at the present situation.

Objectives:

• To increase combustion efficiency of traditional husk fired furnace of small rice mills in order to save husk which would be used for animal feed, chicken litter and briquette fuel etc. • To produce value-added products from rice husk ash (such as: activated carbon, silicates sand, building materials). • To improve working conditions of operators by incorporation of safety devices in boiler and furnace

Methodology:

A survey was conducted to collect detailed technical and socio-economic data on rice processing, briquetting and various uses of rice husk in Bangladesh. The data collection was focused on: • Financial information and organizational structures of small-scale rice milling and briquetting operations. • An assessment of attitude of rice mill owners to technological changes. • The attitude of the mill owners towards safety issues. • Use of rice husk as animal feed, chicken litter. • Technical data for energy use in briquetting, machinery configuration. • Current use of rice husk ash.

Achievement/Findings:

10% of the paddy was dry processed and the husk produced was used for making briquettes. 30% of paddy was processed in households, i.e.; it does not enter the market. In the year 2000, 60% of 29.857m tonnes of paddy were hulled in the small mills. Nearly the entire amount of the husk-bran mixture was used as fuel for the boiler. Gain generated at national level by 15% increase in husk-bran availability through enhanced furnace efficiency is nearly 900,000 tons of husk-bran mixture per annum. Briquetting of rice husk for use as fuel was introduced in Bangladesh in 1990. In Sylhet, the owner of Star Charcoal, Aftar Mohemed, imported a briquette-making machine from Taiwan. It was complete with automatic loading facilities and a drum dryer. However, problems of maintenance soon emerged and automatic loading system and the drum dryer were abandoned. The technology was gradually adapted and shaped to fit indigenous capability and has subsequently reached its present form.
