Popularizing BRRI Developed Agricultural Machinery to Augment Mechanized Rice Cultivation in Bangladesh (pamp/gob Fund)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twenty eight demonstrations were conducted with BRRI Rice-Wheat thresher and BRRI Rice-Wheat reaper during wheat and paddy harvesting seasons. The demonstrations revealed that about 68-75% of the farmers expressed satisfaction on the performance of BRRI machines (TH7) for wheat and paddy threshing. However, about 96% farmers wanted to purchase BRRI machines. Most farmers bided a lower price than the actual price of the machines. However, about 82-91% of the farmers expressed their options to use machines on rental basis and they offered a rental charge of Tk.750.0 - 1125.0 per ha which is more reasonable for profitable use of machines on rental basis.

Objectives:

To create awareness among the farmers about the importance of planting, seedling, harvesting & postharvesting activities at appropriate time and method and use of hand/power operated farm machinery and its utility. To create awareness among the farmers about utility of BRRI developed farm machinery through demonstration & other ways and motivate them to use machine in order to reduce loss and cost of production. To take step in right time & method to increase production & productivity at farmer's level by using appropriate farm machinery. To take steps to popularize BRRI developed farm machinery for other crops.

Methodology:

a) Site Selection Selection of sites was made on the basis of the following criteria: easily accessible of high cropping intensity area an area of labour shortage (Suburb area, where labourer migrate to the urban area and Boarder area, where they might be engaged in other off farm job). b. Data were collected on the farmers reaction on the machine performance A questionnaire was prepared and respondents were asked questions relating to 1. social acceptability, 2. technical performance, 3. profitability/social benefits, 4. effectiveness of communication and training programs, 5. private entrepreneurship possibility for equipment repair and maintenance and 6. maintenance needs of the equipment c) Demonstration At each site at least 50 participants mostly farmers were invited and machines were operated before them at least for half an hour. A short questionnaire were supplied to the participants asking their opinion/comments on machine performance. Afterwards data were analyzed and discussions were made. Machinery Demonstrated 1. Achievement/Findings:

Benefits from demonstration Through conducting farm level demonstration, the following benefits might be achieved: i) Awareness on farm machinery among the farmers was developed. ii) Farmers’ knowledge on operation, repair and maintenance was improved. iii) Importance of timely planting, harvesting and threshing was demonstrated to the farmers through the use of machinery. iv) With the expansion of farm machinery in the farmers’ field, repair and maintenance facilities were developed in the rural areas and thus rural peoples income is generated. v) Rental service of farm machinery would develop private sector business enterprises vi) Local manufacturing of farm machinery was encouraged
