The experiment was conducted to determine the best combination of nitrogen and irrigation level on growth, yield and storage life of onion bulb. Five levels of nitrogen (0. 60. 90, 120 and 150 kg ha-1) and three levels of irrigation (I1: irrigation at 10 days interval: I2: irrigation at 15 days interval: I3: irrigation at 20 days interval) was used in the experiment. A blanket fertilizer dose of P60 K80 S20 Zn4 B1 kgha-1 + Cowdung 10 tha-1 was applied in the experiment. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Results revealed that winter onion BARI piaz-4 responded significantly to irrigation and nitrogen. The highest yield (19.7 tha-1) was obtained from N150 provided with 7 irrigations at 10days interval (I1.). Loss of onion bulb was higher with 90 kg ha-1 and 7 irrigations at 10 days interval.

Variety and Species
1. To increase yield potential of onion (BARI Piaz -4) and
2. To increase the shelf life of onion with the application of nitrogen fertilizer and supply irrigation water.
The experiment was conducted at Regional Spices Research Centre, Gazipur during 2011-2012 with the objectives: To increase yield potential of winter onion (BARI Piaz -4) and to observe storage behavior of winter onion with added nitrogen and irrigation water. Five levels of nitrogen viz.: 0, 60, 90, 120 and 150 kg ha-1 and three levels of irrigation I1: irrigation at 10 days interval, I2: irrigation at 15 days interval and I3: irrigation at 20 days interval was applied in the experiments. Irrigation was stopped 21 days before harvesting. A blanket fertilizer dose of P60 K80 S20 Zn4 B1 kgha-1 + Cowdung 10 tha-1 was added to nourish the crop. The entire quality of cowdung, P S Zn B and 1/3 of N and K were applied at final land preparation and the remaining N and K were applied in two equal splits at 25 and 50 days after planting. The experiment was laid out in factorial RCB deign with three replications. The unit plot size was 2m x 1.5m. Onion seedlings were planted on 5 December 2012 at the spacing of 15cm x10cm. Intercultural operations such as weeding and mulching were done as and when required. To protect the crop from insect pest and diseases insecticides and fungicides were sprayed at (Rovral, Ridomil Gold and Antacol) 10-15 days interval. The crop was harvested on 20 March 2012. Data on yield parameters and bulb yield and was taken. Onion bulbs were stored at the wooden rake on 25 March 2012 for observing storage life of onion bulbs. During storing physiological weight loss and decay loss as well as sprouting of onion bulbs were recorded at 15 days interval. Collected data were statistically analyzed following Crop Stat program and the mean perpetration was made by LSD test.
