Rice Storage in the Underground Pit

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Under ground pit storage of paddy was studied in wet season (June-September). It was observed that moisture condensation occurred in the pit storage. Seed viability decreased from 87.5 to 2% after 100 days of storage. However, no living insect was found compared with the control. Thus, it can be concluded that pit storage of paddy is not suitable under humid conditions.

Objectives:

Methodology:

A under ground pit, of 1.5 m x 1.5 m x 2 m size was excavated near FMPHT division. The bottom of the pit was partly filled with sand and covered with jute bags to soak water of the pit under humid condition. 126 kg of paddy, BR26 variety was packed in 12 jute bags and then put into two polyethylene bags. The top of the polyethylene bags was loosely tightened and pressed under some loads. Then a metal frame (1.5 m x 1.5 m x 0.5 m) was put on the top of the pit to prevent rat damage and a polyethylene sheet was laid on the frame to prevent water penetration in the storage system. Initially moisture content, viability and insect population of the paddy were determined. The pit was opened after 100 days and samples were collected for measuring moisture content, viability as well as insect population. During the storage period most of the time it heavily rained. The storage structure was observed externally to check rodent attack and other casualties due to excessive rainfall regularly. The control placed under the shade in the ambient condition.

Achievement/Findings:

It can be concluded from these results, pit storage of paddy is not suitable under humid condition. However, the experiment could be conducted in dry period (October to April) to test its suitability.
