Energy Audit for Rice Production Under Power Tiller and Bullock Farming Systems

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Energy input for different stages of rice production under PT farming and bullock farming system were recorded. A total of 15656.65 MJ/ha was consumed under PT farming system and 13781.22 MJ/ha was consumed under bullock farming system. About 13.6% higher energy was used in PT system compared to bullock farming system. Although PT consumed more energy than bullock system but it saved about 57% time in land preparation. Bullock farming system consumed more labour energy(1447 MJ/ha) than that of the PT farming system(1305 MJ/ha). Fertilizer was the largest energy input (47-50% of the to full) in both the system. In the PT system 0.023 litre diesel was needed to produce one kg of paddy where as in bullock system 0.014 litre diesel was needed to produce same amount of paddy production i,e diesel requirement is almost double in PT farming system. Irrigation consumed the second largest energy about 21-25% of the total in both the system.

Objectives:

1. To audit energy requirement in bullock farming system and power tiller farming system. 2. To know the energy use pattern for various farm activity. 3. To find out the activity which contribute major share of energy in rice. 4. To help the policy maker for national level planning.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the farm of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute. Two plots were selected for two farming system. Both experiments were conducted simultaneously to study the effect of practices on yield. BRRI dhan31 was established in bullock farming system and BRRI dhan32 was established in PT farming systems. For the calculation of energy input the observed time and fuel consumption were multiplied by energy coefficient. These energy were put down under direct energy. The indirect energy included machinery use, seed, fertilizer, pesticides etc. The direct and indirect energy constituted the total requirement of energy input for both farming system. The energy input and energy output from rice and straw were calculated in Mega Joule. For auditing rice energy equivalence of various energy inputs and outputs as suggested by Mittal and Dhawan (1988) were used. The energy input from non-commercial sources are ignored because this energy is coming from natural source.

PT farming system consumed 15,565.55 MJ/ha whereas 13,378.22 MJ/ha was consumed under bullock farming system i.e. 13.6% higher energy input was used in PT system than that of bullock system. Higher energy input in PT system was due to the use of high quality energy source i.e. diesel. Among all other agricultural operation land preparation, irrigation, fertilizing consuming bulk of energy in the farm. From operation-wise analysis showed that in land preparation almost 3 times more energy was consumed under PT system than that of bullock system. Although more energy is consumed under PT farming system but there was a savings of 57.84% time in land preparation. This implies that land preparation in PT system was faster than bullock system, thus requiring less labour during peak periods and hence would enable the farmer to command more area under resource constrain. The draft power available from animals for tillage is not sufficient. Bullock farming system consumed more labour energy (1447.57 MJ/ha) than that of the PT farming system (1305 MJ/ha). This implies that more labour is needed under bullock farming system especially in land preparation. Fertilizer is the largest energy input in both the system. About 47-50% of the total energy was consumed by fertilizer. Irrigation consumed the second largest energy i.e. 21-25% of total energy in both the system. Irrigation is essential for high yielding varieties and water stress significantly effects the yield. In PT system 0.023 l diesel was needed to produce one kg of paddy whereas in bullock system 0.014l diesel was needed to produce same amount of paddy production i.e diesel requirement is almost double in PT farming system. From this analysis we can predict how much diesel fuel is to be needed for crop production in each cropping season if every farm is to be mechanized.
