Test and Evaluation of Vietnamese Low Cost Dryer

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A SRR-1 dryer was fabricated in the research workshop and its performance was tested. The fabrication cost is about Tk 5,000.00 and can dry ton of paddy both unparboiled and parboiled. Head rice recovery as higher in dryer dried paddy compared to that of sun dried.

Objectives:

To assess the existing the existing practices and problems of paddy drying at farm level in selected area(s) of Bangladesh
To construct, commission and pilot test the drier in the selected areas(s) of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The dryer consist of 3 major components a) A two-stage axial fan (350 mm dia. 7 blade) b) A -hp, and phase 2800 rpm electric motor electric heater, (1 KW) c) A bamboo mat drying bin (1.5 m cia x 1.1 m height). Rapid rural Appraisal (RRA): Based on the questionnaire prescribed by CREMENT a rapid rural appraisal (RRA) was carried out in the selected problem areas viz. Sylhet and Chittagong districts. Sylhet and Chittagong districts were primarily selected to organize the test and demonstration of the dryer, because these two districts suffer most from acute paddy drying problem every year. Therefore, the RRA was confined only these two districts. However, the information may be applicable to all over Bangladesh having similar weather, social and economic structure of farm families. Drying test were conducted on both parboiled and unparboiled paddy, Energy consumption for fan and for heater, moisture content of test paddy at four locations at a fixed interval.

Achievement/Findings:

The RRA findings suggest that mechanical drying facilities should be introduced in Bangladesh. The Vietnamese dryer can be built even at remote village workshop with semi skilled technicians. The characteristics of simplicity, profitability, adaptability to variable capacity and quick resetting make the dryer more adaptive to Bangladesh conditions. The investment, operating cost was found to be within the reach of Bangladeshi farmers.
