Development of Chula

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Three experiments were conducted for the development of chula. Firstly, the performance of ground traditional chula was improved through the incorporation of perforated screen, ash outlet and reduction of Jhika height from 4 to 1.5 cm. This modification saves about 35% fuel in traditional chula. Secondly, the performances of improved chula with and without jhika were compared using light density fuel. About 50% fuel wastage was observed in the jhikaless chula compared to jhika chula. The BCSIR chula has been modified for light density fuel by increasing the height of the burning chamber from 16 to 20 cm. Thirdly, earthen perforated screen with 6 mm opening size was developed for improved chula which is 75% less costly than the previously used metal screen.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Two units of Ground chula have been constructed in the Temporary Chula Research Laboratory (TCRL) in the Farm Machinery and Post Harvest Technology Division, BRRI. The first unit was constructed exactly as the traditional chula available in the rural Bangladesh. The second unit was constructed adjacent to the first unit with some modifications viz (a) the height of Jhika was reduced from 5 cm to 1.5 cm, (b) a screen was incorporated at a depth of about 25 cm from the top to hold the fuel during burning.and (c) an opening was provided by the side of the chula in order to supply oxygen from the bottom of the fuel and to remove ash. Two alluminium pots each of which filled with 5 litres of water. The initial temperature of the water was recorded. The same amount(1 kg) of fuel i.e. tree leaves were taken for each of the chulas.The two units of the chulas were operated simultaneously by two operators. The time required to raise the temperature of water to 100°C were recorded. During the course of heating, the temperature of the water was recorded at 5 minutes interval. After boiling, the left over fuel for each of the chulas were measured. They were subtracted from the initial weight of the fuel to work out the fuel required by each of the chulas.

Achievement/Findings:

1. Provision of perforated screen for fuel and ash outlet in the Ground Traditional chula and reduction of jhika height from 4 to 1.5 cm saves 35% fuel. 2. For successful burning of light density fuel in Ground Traditional Chula the size of perforation of earthen screen should be 5 mm. 3. Incorporation of fuel screen and increasing the height of the burning chamber up to 20 cm made the portable chula suitable for light density fuel. 4. At least 10 mm gap between the chula top and the pot is necessary for sufficient heat transmission through the middle section of the pot. 5. BRRI developed earthen chula screen is 75% less costly than the previously used metal screen.
