Evaluation of Power Operated Japanese Rice Transplanter (ap200)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The performances of Japanese rice transplanter (AP 200) was evaluated on concrete floor and in field. The forward speeds at concrete floor and field were 0.54 and 0.42 m/sec respectively. The number of seedling per hill can be varied by adjusting the groove setting. The field capacities of the transplanter with 13 and 9.5 cm long seedlings were 0.116 and 0.089 ha/hr respectively. The percentage of missing hill was less than 2%. The crop yield was 5.4 ton/ha which is comparable to that of hand transplanting method.

Objectives:

1. To confirm the workability of different functional component of the transplanter through laboratory test. 2. To determine the field performances of the transplanter.

Methodology:

The seedlings were raised in trays and nursed on concrete floor. The dimension of each tray was 30 cm X 60 cm x 3 cm. A sheet of newspaper was put on the bed of the tray and it was packed with soil. The pre-germinated rice seeds were spread uniformly at the rate of 4 -5 seeds per sq. cm. The trays were put in stacks and covered by a wire-mesh rat cage in order to protect them from rat damage. The seedlings were nursed with sufficient amount of water. For observational field trial in the off-season thirteen days old seedlings (13 cm long) of BR 29 variety were transplanted on 24/10/99 in the early Boro season at BRRI farm. In this test a 25m x 12m field was taken. The field water depth was 1-3 cm and depth of planting was 4 cm. The field settling duration was 96 hours after final preparation. The seedling density at the mat was 4.5 nos/cm2. However, the number of fully grown leaves per plant were 3. Each length-wise pass was considered as a replication and 20 replications were considered for the whole test.

Achievement/Findings:

1. For the successful operation of mechanical transplanter in silty clay loam soil only 24–36 hours settling of the field after final preparation; and about 1-2 cm standing water are necessary. 2. The minimum seedling height of 9 cm can be used in the transplanter. In case of cold weather (15-21⁰C), the seedlings in trays can be kept for a maximum of 27 days under open sky. 3. Mechanical transplanting by Japanese type transplanter is about 40-50 times faster than manual transplanting 4. The yield of machine transplanted field is comparable to the hand transplanted field.
