Integrated Management of Rice Stem Borer in BARIsal Region

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Results of three locations in Barisal region indicated that the farmers did not get benefit from the application of insecticides against stem borers if the infestation level remain below the economic threshold level (ETL).

Objectives:

Validation and demonstration of stem borer management technologies

Methodology:

The trial was conducted on the variety BRRI dhan29 in three locations of Barisal sadar upazilla. The locations were selected on the basis of uniformities in land type, variety cultivated and other cultural practices. Seedlings were transplanted at 20 cm X 20 cm spacing in plots measuring 15-20 decimals in each location. There were four treatments viz. T₁ = Collection of egg mass, sweeping and perching, T₂ = Collection of egg mass, sweeping, perching and ETL based insecticides application, T₃ = Prophylactic insecticides application, T₄ = Farmers practices ( Control). The plots were exposed to natural infestation of the insect pests. Data on dead hearts (DH) at vegetative stage and white heads (WH) at reproductive stage from 20 randomly selected hills along the diagonals of each plot were collected. All other data such as collection of egg mass, sweeping were also taken as required.

Achievement/Findings:

In general, stemborer infestation was low at the early stage of the Boro crop. Dead heart (DH) counts taken at vegetative stage showed that the infestation level was below the ETL (Economic Threshold Level) level. More or less a similar infestation level also was found in the reproductive stage. White head (WH) counts also did not cross the ETL level. So ETL based insecticide application was not done during the experimental period. Highest level of DH percent (2.85%) was observed in T₂ plot although collection of egg mass, sweeping and perching methods were applied in these plot. However, no significant (F = 0.607; p = >5%) difference was found in the level of infestation (% DH) among the treatments. Similarly, no significant difference was observed in WH incidence although a higher WH% was found in T₁ (F = 0.324; p = >5%). Prophylactic application of insecticides at 15 days interval failed to show any significant differences in the level of infestation with the other methods. Although yield was found higher in T₂ plot but there was no statistical difference with the other treatments. The result of trial conducted in the Boro season showed no significant difference in the level of stemborer infestation and yield (t/h) among the treatments, which indicate that the farmers did not get benefit from the application of insecticides against stemborers in such low level of infestations.
