Demonstration, Modification and Improvement of Lowland Rice Weeder

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Three lowland rice weeders viz. BRRI weeder, Japanese weeder and blade type weeder were demonstrated at BRRI farm. Almost all the observers responded that the performance of BRRI weeder was significantly better than the other weeders. It was also identified that in second weeding at 6-9 tiller per hill some of the plants were damaged due to dragging action. Therefore, width of BRRI weeder has been reduced to 13 cm from 15 for operation in the field planted at 20 cm spacings.

Objectives:

To determine the effectiveness of BRRI weeder in the fields of varied row spacing.

Methodology:

During the Boro/99-2000 season Farm Machinery and Post Harvest Technology (FMPHT) and Agronomy Division, BRRI jointly conducted research and demonstration programme of BRRI weeder, Japanese type weeder and blade type weeders at BRRI farm in order to the validation of the technology.The demonstration was observed by the Director General of BRRI, most of the Head of Divisions and some other BRRI scientists. The BRRI weeder was also demonstrated at Kapasia site.

Achievement/Findings:

1. The modified BRRI weeder (13 cm width) is suitable for both first and second weeding in the field planted in 20 cm spacings between rows. 2. Incorporation of rotary with blade type weeder may not be feasible for lowland rice weeding. 3. The angle between the beam of the weeder and the horizontal should be about 45 degree for effective operation
