Evaluation of the Versatile Multi-crop Planter for Establishing Sprouted Direct-seeded Rice in Aman Season

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Seed incubation period affected the length of radicle and plumule. Radicle length was drastically increased of 24 hrs of incubation. Longest radicle (21.20 mm) was observed in 72 hrs of incubation and shortest (2.1 mm) plumule was observed in 24 hrs incubation. Plumule length was not much increased with the incubation period. In case of 72 hrs incubation, some plumule was broken from the tip due to rotation of seed metering device. But whole plumule was not detached from the seed contact. Radicle was not damaged. Seeds were safely dispensed into the dry soil. Crops were emerged from seven days after seeding in all treatment plots. Seedling emergence was higher in 42 hrs incubation seed followed by 24 hrs soaked seed at 14 DAS. Incubation period influence the tiller production and followed increasing trend upto 77 DAS. At maturity, incubation period did not give significant effect on tiller production. Irrespective of incubation period, Crops were matured within 145 days. Grain yield was significantly affected by incubation period. Highest grain yield was obtained in dry seed (4.41 t ha^-1) and 42 hrs incubated seed (4.10 t ha^-1). There was no statistical difference on yield between dry and 42 hrs incubated seed.

Objectives:

To dispense sprouted rice seed and estimate the damage of radicle and plumule during mechanized sowing; and to determine the optimum time of rice seed incubation for grain yield.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the farmer’s field, Kalipur, Digram, Godagari, Rajshahi during wet season. The study area lies at 24°31′57.54″N and 88°22′40.22″E. Agro-climatic (rainfall, evapotranspiration and thermal condition) data were collected from the weather station. Treatments: • T₁ = Dry seed • T₂ = 24 hrs soaking over night • T₃ = 24 hrs soaking; and 24 hrs sprouting • T₄ = 24 hrs soaking; and 42 hrs sprouting • T₅ = 24 hrs soaking; and 72 hrs sprouting Seed soaking and incubation Seeds were cleaned by immersing them in clean water and removed the floated seeds. Seeds were soaked with tap water. Equal dry weight of uniform seeds were put into fresh water and removed after 24 hours of soaking. The soaked rice seeds were kept in jute bags at ambient air temperate for incubation. In treatment T₅ seeds were soaked at 14th June, 2010 and incubated at 15th June 2010. In treatment T₄ seeds were soaked at 15th June, 2010 and incubated at 16th June 2010. In treatment T₃ seeds were soaked at 16th June, 2010 and incubated at 17th June 2010. In treatment T₂ seeds were soaked at 17th June, 2010. Seeding Land preparation, seed sowing and application of recommended basal fertilizers were done simultaneously by using VMP in a single pass strip tillage operation. Seeds were sown in dry land. Strip tillage was followed in all the treatment plots. A fluted-type seed meter with eight flutes was used in the VMP. BR11, a popular high yielding variety was grown in this experiment during June 2010.

Achievement/Findings:

Seeding with sprouted seed in dry soil not yielded more than non sprouted seed. Incubate seed required more days to sprout but matured the rice crops in the same duration. Sprouted rice seed did not reduce the field duration. It coul be concluded that sprouted rice seeds in aus season could be dispensed safely through the seed meters of VMP.
