Effect of Minimum Tillage on Crop Growth and Yield of Aus Rice in High BARInd Bract

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field capacity in CT, ST, BP and SPWT was 0.11, 0.05, 0.04, and 0.07 ha hr^-1, respectively. Tillage treatment showed significant effect in diesel fuel consumption in land preparation. Fuel consumption was significantly higher in CT (33 l ha^-1) followed by BP (20 l ha^-1), ST (18 l ha^-1) and SPWT (14 l ha^-1). Tillage treatment showed significant effect in labour requirement for land preparation. In land preparation, CT showed significantly highest (47 man-hr ha^-1) labour requirement whereas, lowest in SPWT (24 man-hr ha^-1) treatment, respectively. Land preparation cost was highest in CT (Tk 2805 ha^-1) followed by BP(Tk 1747 ha^-1), ST (Tk 1504 ha^-1) and SPWT (Tk 1248 ha^-1). SPWT showed significantly highest grain yield (4.46 t ha^-1) and lowest grain yield was obtained in BP (3.34 t ha^-1).

Objectives:

To explore the possibility of avoiding field puddling through unpuddled rice transplanting under minimum tillage options in Aus season

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the farmer’s field Kalipur, Godagari, Rajshahi during during Aus 2010. The study area lies at 24°30′12.56″N and 88°21′26.79″E. The treatments were in puddled condition (i) Conventional puddling (CT); (ii) Single pass wet tillage (SPWT); and in unpuddled condition (iii) Strip tillage (ST) and; (iv) Bed planting (BP). The treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block (RCB) design with three replications. In land preparation, CT consisted of 2 passes primary tillage by 2 WT and exposed to sun for two days followed by inundating whole plot and puddling by 2WT with 2 passes to complete land preparation. In SPWT, one pass tillage by 2 WT after inundating the field. ST and BP were done by Versatile Multi-crop Planter (VMP) in single pass operation before inundating the field. Land was inundated one day before transplanting operation for making the land soft to transplant seedling in ST, BP and SPWT. Local variety Parija was sown in 15 June 2010. The seedling spacing for CT, BP and SPWT was 25 x 15 cm and 20 x 15 cm for ST. The entire amount of triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate were broadcasted and incorporated into the soil at final land preparation. Urea was top dressed in three equal installments. Grain yield was recorded from pre-selected 10 m2 area and was adjusted to 14% moisture content. A simple economic analysis was done based on total production. Production cost included rental charge of the land and input cost. Price of the produce was collected from the local markets to compute total production cost, gross return, gross margin and benefit-cost ratio. Data were analysed by using statistical software Mstat-C. Means were compared with least significant difference (LSD) test.

Achievement/Findings:

SPWT showed lowest fuel consumption among the tillage treatments i.e. 58% fuel could be saved in land preparation compared to CT. Labour requirement for land preparation in SPWT was 56% less than in conventional tillage. Labour did not encounter any difficulties to transplant in unpuddled field. The expenditure for tillage decreased upto 38-56% cost in land preparation in minimum tillage compared to conventional tillage. SPWT indicated cost saving tillage technology for land preparation.
