Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The common post-harvest practices of Bangladesh are harvesting by sickle, field transport on head and shoulder, piling of harvested stalks at home yard, threshing by hand beating, pedal and power thresher and cleaning of threshed paddy by winnowing basket (Kula). The total loss estimates for field operation (cutting to threshing) was 3.09, 2.94 and 1.25% for method 1 (sickle cutting - man transportation - open drum threshing- winnower), method 2 (sickle cutting - man transportation - close drum threshing- winnower) and method 3 (combine harvester), respectively. The loss in the combine process is lower than in either method 1 or method 2. Overall, the adoption of combine harvester use should be the highest priority for reducing post harvest loss.

Objectives:

To determine the post harvest losses of rice

Methodology:

The researchers selected Gazipur district during Aman 2012 for rice postharvest loss assessment, where there was easy access to BRRI headquarters and it was possible to secure the cooperation of farmers. The loss assessment work was done in the field and in laboratories. For harvesting, mark the field with nylon rope and bamboo pole. The loss assessment area was 50 sqm (5m x 10m) for harvesting. 2.5sqm (0.5m x 5m) in one end of the area was used for measuring post harvest (cutting) loss from 50sq m for manual harvesting by sickle. For combine harvester, cutting loss was measured from 16m² (10m×1.6m) area from 50sqm. One pass of the combine covers 1.6m. For cutting loss, grain falls on the ground and is collected manually. The whole 50sqm was then harvested using sickle, bundled, transported and threshed to get the grain weight as obtained yield. The loss was calculated on the basis of grain weight. To analyze the data, both descriptive and tabular methods were used. The descriptive methods were mostly used for analyzing data of assessing the losses incurred in harvest. Average and percentage were used for loss calculation in this study.

Achievement/Findings:

For loss minimization 1. Rice should be harvested at optimum maturity with the appropriate harvest technology to reduce cutting loss. These postharvest technologies should be disseminated and made available to the farmers for application and use in their on-going operations 2. Farmers should be encouraged to perform post-harvest operations (threshing, winnowing) in the field/ near the field, using canvas/PVC sheet/ paved floor wherever possible to avoid bundling/transport loss 3. Farmer awareness programmes on capacity building related to harvest, postharvest issues should be implemented.
