The experiment was conducted at Spices Research Centre, Shibganj, Bogra during rabi season (2012-2013) with an objective to develop winter onion lines with tolerance to purple leaf blotch disease from segregated population. F1 bulbs were used in this study. These bulbs were planted on 05 November 2012. At maturity seeds were harvested, processed and stored for further study.

Variety and Species
To develop desirable winter onion lines the experiment with F1 population was under taken to produce BC1 seed production for future study.
The experiment was conducted at Spices Research Centre, Shibganj, Bogra during rabi season (2012-2013) to develop winter onion lines with tolerance to purple leaf blotch. F1 bulbs (obtained from crossing between ♀BARI Onion-1 x ♂Bunching onion & ♀BARI Onion-4 x ♂Bunching onion) were used in this study. BARI Onion-1 & 4 has good keeping quality but susceptible to purple leaf blotch. Bunching onion is year round and tolerant to purple leaf blotch. F1 bulbs were planted on 10 November 2012 and seeds were harvested on 25 April 2013. The unit plot size was 1m x 1m having plant spacing of 25cm x 25cm. The crop was fertilized with cow dung 10 t/ha, N115, P54, K75, S20, Zn3 and B2 Kg/ha. Weeding was done at 25, 50, 75 & 100 days after planting. Irrigation was applied at 20, 40, 60, 80 & 100 days after planting. Fungicide (Ruvral @ 2.5 g/l) was sprayed at 15 days interval starting from 60 day after planting. Insecticide (Admare @ 0.5 ml/l) was sprayed at 15 days interval starting from 90 day after planting. At the time of flowering the crop were covered with mosquito net for avoiding out crossing. Artificial pollination was done by hand within net. At the time of flowering BC1 was done. At maturity seeds were harvested, processed and stored.
Annual Research Report 2012-13, Spice Research Center, BARI, Shibganj, Bogra
At maturity seeds were harvested and stored for further study in the following year. Mean performance of harvested BC1 seeds of different crossing materials are given Table-1. About 07 g seeds were collected from BARI Onion-1 x Bunching Onion (BC1) & 09 g collected from BARI Onion-4 x Bunching (BC1). The germination percentage of crosses varied from 72-75%.
