The experiment was conducted at Spices Research Centre, Shibganj, Bogra during robi season (2012-2013) with a view to develop winter onion lines/varieties with longer shelf life, thin necked bulb with good yield potential. F3 bulbs were used in this study. Last year selected six types bulbs of F3 generation viz. F3-1, F3-2, F3-3, F3-4, F3-5 and F3-6 were planted for seed production maintaining isolation distance. At maturity stage seeds were harvested, processed and stored for next year study.

Variety and Species
To develop winter onion lines/varieties having thin necked bulb with longer shelf life the present study was undertaken
The experiment was conducted at Spices Research Centre, Shibganj, Bogra during rabi season (2012-2013) with a view of to develop winter onion lines/varieties with thin necked bulb, longer shelf life and good yield potential from F3 population. Six types bulbs (F3-1, F3-2, F3-3, F3-4, F3-5 and F3-6) of F3 generation were used in this study which was selected in the last year. The crossing material was ♀BARI Onion-4 x ♂BARI Onion-1. Six types of bulbs were planted in six different farmer’s field on 15 November 2012, maintaining isolation distance for seed production. The matured umbel was harvested on 25 April 2013. The unit plot size was 10.0m x 1.50m having plant spacing of 25cm x 20cm. Onion was fertilized with recommended dose of cow dung 10 t/ha, N115, P54, K75, S20, Zn3 and B2 Kg/ha. Weeding was done at 25, 50, 75 & 100 days after planting. Irrigation was applied at 20, 40, 60, 80 & 100 days after planting. Fungicide (Ruvral @ 2.5 g/l) was sprayed at 15 days interval starting from 60 day after planting. Insecticide (Admare @ 0.5 ml/l) was sprayed at 15 days interval starting from 90 day after planting.
Annual Research Report 2012-13, Spice Research Center, BARI, Shibganj, Bogra
In the study, the seeds were harvested, processed and stored for further study. In coming winter season’s seedling will be raised for F4 bulb production and selection will be made on the basis of shelf life, bulb size and colour. Mean performance of different six types harvested F4 seeds are given in Table-1. The highest seed yield (380g) and germination percentage (87) was obtained from F3-1 generation.
