The experiment was conducted during rabi season (2012-2013) for searching male sterile onion lines at farmer’s field of Rajshahi (Kadamsahar, Taherpur and Durgapur), Faridpur (Salta and Ambikapur), Rajbari (Pangsha) and Pabna (Ataicola and Madhupur) region. About 30- 80% male sterility was observed among this location. It was noted that 40-60% male sterility was found at Kadamsahar, Taherpur and Durgapur region. At Ataicola and Madhupur farmers field 30-40% male sterility was observed. About 70-80% male sterility was found at Faridpur region (Salta and Ambikapur). These plants were tagged for seed collection for future study in the following year. Effort may be repeated in the next year for searching about 100% male sterility at farmer’s field.

Variety and Species
To find out the male sterile line through field visit during flowering time of onion in different onion producing regions like Rajshahi, Faridpur, Rajbari and Pabna region.
The experiment was conducted at farmer’s field of Rajshahi, Faridpur, Rajbari and Pabna region during robi season (2012-2013). About 80-100 plants were selected for male sterility study. Fresh flowers were collected from the field in recently open flower of the selected plants. A tiny droplet of 1% acetocarmine stain was placed on the slide. Using a teasing needle, anther was placed on stain, tapering and thoroughly mixed to ensure uniform penetration of the stain into the pollen. Cover slips were gently placed on to different slides and observed under a stereomicroscope to identify the male sterility from different selected plants. Non-dyed pollen indicate male sterile and dyed pollen indicate male fertile.

For searching male sterile line, farmer’s field at different regions was visited and trying to search male sterile onion lines. It was observed that 40-60% male sterility was found at Rajshahi- Kadamsahar, Taherpur and Durgapur farmers’ field (Table 1). At Ataicola and Madhupur farmers field it was reported that 30-40% male sterility was found. About 70-80% male sterility was observed at Faridpur (Ambikapur and Salta) and Rajbari (Pangsha) region. These plants were tagged for seed collection for future study in the following year. At spices research centre, about 70-80 % male sterility was found in some crossing materials. Some bulbils were also found in one winter onion line which was stored for next year study. Jones and Davis (1944) also reported that the bulbils’ producing plant developed male sterility in Italian Red Onion.
