The experiment was conducted at Spices Research Centre, Bogra during rabi season (2012-2013) to find out the male sterile line for hybrid variety development of onion with desired traits by using MH The planting materials were BARI Onion-1, 2, 3, 4 &5. The treatments were viz. T1 = MH (150 ppm) at 30 days after sowing (DAS), T2 = MH (150 ppm) at 30 + 45 DAS, T3 = MH (150 ppm) at 30 + 45 + 60 DAS, T4 = MH (200 ppm) at 30 DAS, T5 = MH (200 ppm) at 30 + 45 DAS, T6 = MH (200 ppm) at 30+ 45 + 60 DAS, T7 = MH (250 ppm) at 30 DAS, T8 = MH (250 ppm) at 30 + 45 DAS, T9 = MH (250 ppm) at 30 +45 + 60 DAS and T10 = water spray. Spraying of MH according to treatments was done. It was found that some treated plant showed 40-70% male sterility. It was not up to the desired marke. It was suggested that it may be repeated in the next year. Seeds from male sterility showing plant was collected and stored in refrigerator for further study.

To develop the male sterile line for hybrid variety development of onion with desired traits by using MH.
The experiment was conducted at Spices Research Centre, Bogra during robi season (2012-2013) to find out the male sterile line for hybrid variety development of onion with desired traits by using maleic hydrazide ( MH). The planting materials were BARI Onion-1, 2, 3, 4 &5. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The treatments were viz. T1 = MH (150 ppm) at 30 days after sowing (DAS),T2 = MH (150 ppm) at 30 + 45 DAS, T3 = MH (150 ppm) at 30 + 45 + 60 DAS,T4 = MH (200 ppm) at 30 DAS ,T5 = MH (200 ppm) at 30 + 45 DAS, T6 = MH (200 ppm) at 30+ 45 + 60 DAS, T7 = MH (250 ppm) at 30 DAS, T8 = MH (250 ppm) at 30 + 45 DAS, T9 = MH (250 ppm) at 30 +45 + 60 DAS and T10 = water spray. The crop was planted on 13 November 2012. The size of unit plot was 2.0 m x 2.0 m having plant spacing of 25 cm x 20 cm. Onion was fertilized with recommended dose of cow dung 10 t/ha, N115, P54, K75, S20, Zn3 and B2 Kg/ha. Irrigation was applied at 20, 40, 60, 80 & 100 days after planting. Fungicide (Ruvral @ 2.5 g/l) was sprayed at 15 days interval starting from 60 day after planting. Insecticide (Admare @ 0.5 ml/l) was sprayed at 15 days interval starting from 90 day after planting. The recorded data were pollen sterility (%).

Spraying of MH was done according to the treatments. About 70% male sterility was observed from T9 treatment in BARI Onion-1. It was found that treatment T9 showed about 60-70% male sterility in case of BARI Onion-2 & 5. Treatment T7 represented only 40-50% male sterility on BARI Onion-3 & 4. The result was found promising than previous year. Though it is not up to the desired mark, the study may be repeated in the next year. Seeds from male sterility showing plant was collected and stored in refrigerator for further study
