The experiment was conducted at the field of Regoinal Spices Research Centre, Joydevpur, Gazipur during 2012-2013 to evaluate the performance of different onion germplasm and to select the promising one(s). Five onion germplasm from indigenous and exotic sources (ON0065, ON0066, ON0067, ON0068 and ON0069) with BARI Onion-2 (as check) were evaluated on the basis of their phenotypic variation. All the genotypes gave statistically identical bulb yield however, the genotype ON0067 and ON0066 showed better for the bulb yield.
EVALUATION OF SOME ONION GERMPLSM
Regional Spices Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur
Variety and Species
To select superior genotypes of onion for higher yield and good storage quality with desired characters.
The trial was conducted during rabi season of 2012-2013 at Regional Spices Research Centre, Gazipur. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. Five onion germplasm from indigenous and exotic sources (ON0065, ON0066, ON0067, ON0068 and ON0069) with BARI Onion-2 (as check) were evaluated on the basis of their phenotypic variation. The unit plot size was 2m X 1m having twenty plants in number. Seedlings were planted on last week of October from the collected seeds of last year. The spacing was 50cm X 50cm. In addition to 5 t/ha of cow dung, the crop was fertilized with N110P52K75S20Zn4B1.5kg/ha. The entire amount of cow dung P, S, B, Zn, 1/3 N and ½ K was applied during land preparation. The rest N and K was applied in two equal splits at 25 and 50 DAT). Three weedings were done at 25, 45 and 55 DAT. Four irrigations were done at 26, 46, 56 and 70 DAT Data on number of bulb per plot, bulb weight (gm), bulb diameter (cm), bulb length (cm), and yield (kg/plot). The crop was harvested on last week of April. The collected data were analyzed by following MSTAT-C software.
Annual Research Report 2012-13, Spice Research Center, BARI, Shibganj, Bogra

The yield and contributing characters of different onion genotypes are shown in Table 1. Significant variations were observed among the germplasm in respect of number of bulb per plot, bulb weight, bulb diameter and bulb length and yield of bulb per plot. The highest bulb weight (44.67gm) was recorded from ON0067 which was identical to other germplasm except ON0069. The highest diameter of bulb (3.87cm) was obtained from BARI onion 2 which was identical to ON0065, ON0066 and ON0067. The bulb yield did not vary due to different germplasm however, ON0067 (2.067 kg/plot) and ON0066 (1.900 kg/plot) gave higher yield. The lowest bulb yield was obtained from ON0069 (1.333kg/plot).
