The experiment was conducted at the field of Plant Genetic Resource Center, Joydebpur, Gazipur during 2012-2013 to develop thin necked onion bulb withlonger shelf-life through back crosses method. BARI Onion-1 (♂) and BARI Onion-5 (♀) bulbs were used as crossing materials. Only 5 g seeds were obtained from the cross which was stored for bulb production.

Variety and Species
To develop thin necked high yielding variety with good shelf life of onion.
The experiment was conducted at the field of Plant Genetic Resource Center, Joydebpur, Gazipur during 2012-2013 to develop thin necked onion bulb with longer shelf-life. BARI Onion-1 (♂) and BARI Onion-5 (♀) bulbs were used as crossing materials. The date of planting was 21 November 2012. The experiment was non-replicated and no design was followed. The unit plot size was 5mX10m with thirty plants having plant spacing of 50cmX50cm. Hybridization between two varieties was done within a net house. Two better plants with synchronized anthesis one from each of two varieties was considered. Remaining non-syncronized plants were removed. In addition to 5 t/ha of cow dung, the crop was fertilized with N115P55K75S20Zn4B1.5Mo1kg/ha. The entire amount of cow dung P, S, B, Zn, Mo, ¼ N and ¼ K was applied during land preparation. The rest N was applied in three equal splits at 30, and 50 and 70 days after planting (DAP). The rest K was applied in three equal splits at 30, 50 and 70 DAP. Three weeding was done at 25, 45 and 55 DAT. Four irrigations were done at 26, 46, 56 and 70 DAT. Pollination was done manually within the net house. Finally the mature seeds were harvested on 15 April.
